Guest guest
Hello All, My baby turns 1 in a couple of weeks and I'm searching around for some vegan and g-f birthday cake/pie/cookie ideas. The solid foods she eats are cooked apple, banana, avocado and oats. She just tried brown rice for the first time today, too. I'd love to hear some of the recipes you use for birthdays. She hasn't tried any wheat or gluten-containing products, because I'm g-f and am nervous to introduce her to glutens too early! Thanks in advance! Guest guest
Hi Mary, For birthdays around here I have completely given up on cakes...? My children are GF, but I am not, and I don't like the taste/texture of GF cakes, so I prefer to skip that entirely...? What I do instead is run frozen bananas through my champion juicer.? It comes out like soft serve ice cream and it is so tasty!? Then I stick the candles in it!? lol!? My children are young and don't realize they are " missing out " on the cake routine... so this has become OUR family tradition.? Works for us! Something else I have done is chop up a fruit salad and pour Tofu Whipped Cream (I have a recipe I can post if you want.... or you could just use cool whip I suppose).? Then I put the salad in a casserole dish/lasagne pan and put candles in it.? Guest guest
Alina Joy, Could you please post the recipe for the Tofu Whipped Cream?? Does it have that " tofu " taste to it? We are looking for a really good whipped cream recipe. Thanks! Guest guest
We love baked apples stuffed with nuts and dates and raisens and sprinkled with lemon juice, for birthday parties. You can stick a candle in the top too. Guest guest
One more idea. For those of you who like the fruit, Durian, it is a wonderful birthday treat. We buy it frozen at Asian food stores. It is what my 9 year old son requested for his last birthday and it turned out great! (Of course it was not a birthday party with any one but us in attendance. I wouldn't subject the average kid to it if they did not already love it.) Mary, their is a Lemon Poppyseed Cake in our recipe files (link at bottom of post) that is excellent! For baby, you might want to leave the poppy seeds out, although they are tiny. The Eggless Chocolate Cake is great as well --- and again, if you don't want baby to have chocolate yet, carob powder can be substituted straight across. Happy birthday to your little one! Guest guest
I've seen that...? One of my girlfriends did that for her wedding cake and it was phenomenal!? They cut the rounded ends of the watermelon off and then used toothpicks to decorate the sides of the watermelon with blueberries and other brightly colored fruits!? Guest guest
Yes, it does have a odor and is illegal on many forms of public transportation, but just remember that broccoli stinks to those who aren't used to it's smell. Durian tastes nothing like it smells. And when it is frozen, you hardly know it is offensive to some. It is smooth, creamy, deliciousness! I do have a funny story though. The day after my son's birthday I was working over in the other room at my desk. I kept smelling what I thought was a propane leak. My husband thought I was crazy. There is no propane even near this part of the house. Then next day I smelled it again. So I determined to sniff it out. My knees and nose led me to the trash can. I poked around and discovered one of the wrappers from the birthday durian, in MY trash can. My son has so enjoyed his piece that he wanted more, so licked the wrapper and stuck it in the nearest trash can. I'm going to have to be more careful about durian wrappers. From now on the go straight out to the outside trash. And really, I do think they smell much more strongly then the delicious tasting fruit its self. I do think that its smell is there to save more for those who love it most. : ) Of course, I do understand if it appreciated by everyone. Guest guest
Yes, sometimes it does smell like onions. There are certain varieties that smell better then others. The cheap ones in Thailand smell very bad. We buy it frozen her in a package. We can't get it fresh in our town. When it is frozen it generally comes out of the flesh, with only the yellow fruit, minus seeds in a on a plastic tray some something like that. If you had it fresh you could freeze it, but before it was frozen, your whole freezer might smell like durian, and I'm not sure if even I would like that smell when pregnant. I like it best pre-frozen with all the work done. She just tried brown rice for the first time today, too. ?I'd love to hear some of the recipes you use for birthdays. She hasn't tried any wheat or gluten-containing products, because I'm g-f and am nervous to introduce her to glutens too early!? ?Thanks in advance! ?Mary
