I'm so glad you've found us here, Laura. Are there specific types of foods

that you find most challenging? What can we help you with specifically?

There are quite a few experienced " wheat free " cooks on this list and I'm

sure they will be happy to help you out.

Yes please! While my father doesn't have a majorly sensitive tummy,

my hubby does. Honestly that man eats the most blandest food I've

ever tasted. I'm half ashamed to say this but lately all I've fed

him that he's been willing to eat (for dinner that is) has been Egg

Beaters and Ezekiel Bread toast. That is the one thing that has NOT

upset his tummy. I've learned that he can't handle your basic

spices (basil, oregano, sage, etc), absolutely refuses to eat

anything that has garlic in it.

Recently I purchased around 5 books about wheat free gluten free

cooking and was aghast to read that Ezekiel Bread wasn't good for a

wheat free/gluten free diet then read somewhere else that it was.

To say I'm getting overwhelmed is an understatement. I've purchased

the " Bob's Red Mill WF/GF/DF Bread Mix " but my father and hubby

prefer the Ezekiel Bread but I don't want to give them anything that

I shouldn't. So if anyone has any thoughts on if Ezekiel Bread is

ok or not, please share that info too.

I pulled several different recipes off of here last night and will

share them with my mother and a friend of mine whose hubby was

recently diagnosed as having celiac disease (she's in the same boat

as I am with her hubby). I was thrilled to find pie crust recipes

and various bread recipes so Mother and I can start experiementing

before Thanksgiving gets here. My father is a BIG pumpkin pie fan

and just knew he wouldn't be able to have any this year so I'm going

to surprise him. His 80th birthday is the Monday before

Thanksgiving and I'm going to fix him a wf/gf birthday cake and

invite some of his closest friends over to help celebrate.

I went to bed last night very thankful to find this group of folks

willing to help us " newbies " .

Blessings

Laura

Jen,

I have two dogs

both Vegan

one has been vegan for 3 years and she can out run just about any dog I have

ever seen

the other was a orphan we got from the kennel he has been vegan for about

6 months and just about everything about him has improved

dogs have evolved with humans over the last 10000 or so years so it stands

to reason

that they are better off as vegetarians or even vegans

if you would like more info

I would be very happy to list their menu

all the best

Hi Saedric,

I'm from NJ too, and I'm also new to this list. The people seem really friendly

and the topics are interesting. I haven't really jumped in yet to add to the

topics that are being discussed, but I'm looking forward to participating more

as I learn more.

Hi Mike,

Glad you're here. And bravo to your doctor :) The recipe files for

this group are amazing - lots of styles, flavorful, good for all

levels of cooking experience and all the recipes are tried & true.

And we talk cookbooks all the time :) I like Nava Atlas' 5-

Ingredient Vegetarian Gourmet & Robin Robertson's Fresh From the

Vegetarian Slow Cooker and just the other day I found a copy of The

Compassionate Cook in a free box on the side of the road but I

haven't cooked anything from it yet. Anyone here have that one?

Like it/Hate it?

Peace,

Diane

Hi Diane,

Thanks much!

I'll be especially interested in checking out Fresh From the

Vegetarian Slow Cooker...particularly as we move out of summer and

into fall and winter.

Thanks for the warm greeting!

Welcome, Mike, and watch out! Before I joined this group I used to say

I didn't need more cookbooks because you can get so many recipes on the

internet. True, true. And some of the best are in our files.

HOWEVER, somehow I now find myself with about 20 new cookbooks. So

BEWARE! I'm in love with Lorna Sass's Vegetarian Pressure Cooker

cookbook and I made a curried split pea soup out of there tonight. I

also love Nava Atlas's cookbooks (recommended by this group) and I just

bought her Family Cookbook to go next to my also new 5-Ingredient

cookbook. Of course, there has been a recent flurry over the Native

Foods cookbook so I have added that one as well. I plan to make up

their Vegan Ranch Dressing recipe this weekend (I believe you can find

that recipe in our files).

Tomorrow I want to try Deborah Madsen's " Green Barley and Kale Gratin "

recipe. I now get an organic veggie box and today's box included kale.

I need to figure out what to do with the bunch of chives I got - I'm not

a big chives person, but I'm thinking of making a whipped herbed butter

a la Alton Smith. I'm open to healthier suggestions. ;-)

So, Mike, you may get more here than you bargained for. You'll know it

when you start mail ordering smoked paprika, ordering a highly reviewed

mandolin (vegetable slicer), and avidly reading descriptions of swiss

chard preparations - when you thought you hated swiss chard. :-)

I don't know that I can do any welcoming here since I haven't been

penning it here long enough. However it is interesting to talk of

delicious raw vege food. Here is a simple nutrious all time favourite

of mine...

Toasted wheat (whole meal) bread with lots of cottage cheese, raw

sliced capsicum (green pepper) and raw sliced tomato. Very easy to

put together. Great taste and very good for your health.

Welcome Kathleen,

For me, I follow the macrobiotic principles of eating with the seasons.

Therefore, I eat more raw foods during the late spring, summer, and early

fall, for they cool the body when it is hot and more cooked warming dishes

during the late fall, winter and early spring.

I have found that I get sick if I get too far off that balance.

Kathleen,

I have a friend who has told me for years - EAT RAW VEGGIES ! Finally I started

when last

summer's garden was teeming. I was AMAZED how much better I started feeling.

Probably

40% of my diet is now raw. In Los Angeles we are lucky to have many farmers

markets that

sell organic vegetables picked fresh that morning, so it's been quite easy. I

find myself

craving pieces of broccoli (really strange since I NEVER used to eat it) or snow

peas. I found

that many of these vegetables taste better to me raw, than cooked. And when

heaped into a

big salad, can make a wonderful and nutritious meal.

Hello all, thank you for letting me join, this is right where I am supposed

to be at this time in my life.

My name is Karen, I'm 54, married, retired, and owned by a Birman cat Toby.

I have been a vegetarian leaning towards vegan for about 2 months now. I

love it, feel so much better and thinking is much clearer. There are many

reasons for this change in my diet, mostly for animal rights, want to lose

weight and severe IBS-D.

I know I am lactose intolerant, now it seems wheat may be the next thing to

go. I haven't been tested yet, I go in Thursday for some blood work.

Anyway looking forward to getting to know everybody and sharing some great

recipes.
