Welcome to the list Charley. It's good to hear you are willing to

accommodate your daughter - so many don't.

Have you tried red lentils - they are a good base for adding other things

and they supply the protein. You can check on The Vegan Society website

http://www.vegansociety.com/html/ where I think there is a section on vegan

babies and children.

There are vegan yogurts both fruit and plain, made from soya and with a

gentle flavour. Peas and beans are good because you can make them into

spreads and burgers - she may like the taste of yellow split peas, which

make lovely burgers.

I will think some more.

Good Afternoon,

My name is Charley and I am new to the group. I am the mother of a

wonderful 2 1/2 year old girl who absoulty refuses to eat any meat

products or eggs, or milk. So instead of forcing her to change, like

some parents would, I have decided to embrace this. Unfortunatly, I

have no idea what I'm doing. I've been giving her vitamins, and trying

to make sure shes getting protien from other places, like peanut

butter, and chili sin carne. I also picked up some soy cakes, but she

doesn't like them. Anyone have any suggestions? Fruits and Veggies are

no problem. This is the girl who when I took her to panda express the

other day she got the beef and broc and fried rice, and ate the broc,

not the beef, and picked out the peas and carrots in the rice. She

even ate a few bites of the rice. Can anyone give me any advice?

She is a wise and chosen child ; )

I have also a 2 1/2 year old.

feel free to ask any questions.

my advice, is to introduce (slowly) a wide variety of fruits and vegetables early.

that way she will always have a well rounded diet, and no worries about her missing any vitamins.

my kid is vegan and very healthy.

Hi Charley,

My experiance with kids is to not be confrontational. If they dont eat their food, dont make a huge issue out of it, but always make sure that it ( whatever they dont like) is available again at mealtimes, even if they have said that they didnt like it in the past - they sometimes want to try "some of yours".

I know it is had, but most children do tend to go through eating fads. my oldest grew out of not trying things when she was 8, my 8 year old still wont try things.

Unfortunately kids dont come with a manual, but I believe that as long as they get plenty of love and attention and are not spoilt, an are involved in everything ( share food preperation/ shopping etc ) they will turn out fine..........I HOPE!

Hi Charley and WELCOME!

I am way behind on posts, so I am going to hold off on

recommendations until i can catch up and see what everyone else

said. No need to repeat.

But I did want to say hello! :)

I also wanted to thank you! Your daughter is a very lucky little

girl to have a Mom as kind as you.

Thank you so much for that list. Tomorrow is grocery shopping day so

Ill have to pick some of that up and pray she likes it. Sometimes I

wonder if Im gonna lose my mind. And as for many not accomodating it,

my mom was one of them.

Fruits and Veggies arent a problem with her. She constantly will ask

for peas and corn and broc and banannas and pears and apples and

anything that is a fruit or a veggie shell eat no problem. Like

tonight, she went into the kitchen, pulled a chair up to the freezer

and pulled out the squash. brought it to me and asked me to make it,so

tonight for dinner, we had squash(which I hate but ate because of her)

I, and gardenburgers, and for desert we had a fruit combo of sliced

banannas grapes, apples, raisins and canelope. And she ate everything.

Which is something she hardly ever does.

My question is, what are some good snacks? Just yogurt and fruit?

That is indeed excellent advice. Its not an issue of getting her to

try things though. Shell taste it, sometimes shell eat one bite, and

sometimes it ends up in my hand. And she does like to eat off my

plate, but she still will not eat meat off of it. I never lecture her

for not eating something. And she is definatly involved in everything

I do. Im a stay at home mom. So yah I get loads of help during the

day, as long as dora isnt on nick jr. Definatly excellent advice

though. And I find that things usually do have more then one shot,

because unless its just the 2 of us, I usually fix something everyone

else likes that bry hasnt in the past. Thats probably why it seems

like I never leave the kitchen.

I guess what I was meaning to say is that she definatly gets another

chance to try things because we normally have 2 other adults eating

with us who refuse to even consider accomodating her. So usually Ill

get hers ready and then Ill let her try something that she hasnt liked

it the past. No matter what it is. Like she used to not like fried

green tomotos but upon a later trying she did. So its just a matter of

no matter what it is because I do understand that tastes do change.

although there are some foods shes not liked for a year and a

half...like hamburger, no matter how its cooked, or shrimp, or grape

jelly, etc.

No yogurt - YUCK!

Fruit, raw veggies, nuts, soybean nuts, seeds like sunflower and

pumpkin, chips and salsa, crackers and hummus (many different

flavors out there), crackers and preserves, soy ice cream (my hubby

and son who are not Vegan love it!), non-milk chocolate

I know there is more but I am drawing a blank

I like soya yogurts - both plain and fruity. A little one might like it.

She seems to be okay with peanuts, so maybe you could try other nuts - but

they would have to be ground tiny I guess (it's a long time since I had

toddlers) - maybe as a nut loaf. Also in the UK baked beans are vegan.

Maybe you could find some that don't have too much added salt and sugar. If

she had baked beans on toast and some fruit and veggies it would be a good

meal. She will get calcium from broccoli and other veggies, and from nuts

if she eats those.

some of the snacks I pack for lunch are chocolate chip cookies, brownies (homemade with fresh ingredients if possible) apples, applesauce, grapes.

for afternoon snack at home I make them sandwichs, tomato mayonaise, fake cheese, fake bologna, pb & j. (Nuts aren't allowed in School, nor are sandwiches made with nuts)

bananas, soy yoghourt, whole fruit ice cream pops, chips and hummos, berries of all kinds, china colas, and fruit colas, homemade popcorn, home made fries/chips. berrie pies.

you'll find that if you want "snacks" that are healthy and wholesome, you hafta make it yourself. otherwise, store bought snacks that are healthy are hard to find.

plus it's less packaging for the enviroment. :)

I don't think that my kids missing any vitamins, also without the competion from food commercials on tv, its easier for me.

What about " jello " the kosher kind (no animals stuff) or fruz fruit (take

strawberries and mash half of them in the blender and rough chop the rest.

Put in little dixie cups and freeze) or dehydrated fruits or fruit leather

or granola or soy milk smoothies or celery with peanut butter or no bake

cookies (melt some peanut butter, add just a dab of soymilk, use it to hold

together oats and nuts. When it cools, roll into balls and then roll in

powdered sugar) or frozen grapes or frozen bananas or homemade cinnamon

twists.

I don't know the ingredients offhand, but there are jelly crystals here that

are vegan, and rather tasty. The normal jelly (jello) that comes ready made

in little pots is also vegan, strangely enough.

Regular jello is NOT kosher! No orthodox jew will touch it with a ten foot

pole. Jell-O hired a for hire rabbi to say yes but it does NOT meet kosher

requirements. The guy was drummed out for doing that.

Emes is kosher and it is made with carrageenan, locust bean gum and

malto-dextrin. You don't have to use agar agar to make a " jello " that is

vegan.

Just Wholefoods Vegetarian Jelly Crystals - Raw Cane Sugar, Carrageenan,

Locust Bean Gum, Natural Fruit Flavours, Citric Acid, Potassium Citrate. Mix

with boiling water and leave to set. Very tasty. www.justwholefoods.co.uk

The cupsize tubs of Rowntrees readymade jelly from supermarkets says it is

vegetarian and the ingredients listed made it vegan, when I checked,

although I have never bought one. The slabs of jelly cubes that you can

make jelly with have gelatine in though.

Hi Jo

What are " little pots " ? Are those the plastic cups?

We have those here too, both refridgerated and shelf kind. I refuse

to buy the shelf kind because I wonder how much preservatives are in

them that they need no refridgeration.
