Guest guest
My daughter has been gluten free for 15 years. I joined her and I feel great. In December she decided to become vegan too, but was feeling very tired. I took her for bloodwork and the dr. said that her cholesterol has shot up to 230 and her triglicerides are way off. She is very deficient in B12 and is receiving shots for three weeks. The doctor says that the vegan diet is too high in carbs for her to handle. I notice that all of the doctors mentioned in earlier posts promote beans and nuts as protein sources. Some also include grains. All of this is not healthy for someone like my daughter. Her doctor has thrown her on protein bars (which I despise due to the chemicals in them) and asked her to eat fish. It is a shame because she really wants to be vegan and the thought of eating animals is a challenge for both of us. We are really feeling backed into a corner. I want her to be healthy, have energy and live the life she wants to live. Any suggestions would be most appreciated? Lisa greatmuch better. In December she decided to join the vegan ranks too. Guest guest
Hi, I honestly NEVER post on the forum but just read to get ideas but I have to post on this one. I think your doctor is sooooo wrong in having your daughter eat fish and eat protein bars. There are plenty of other things you can do to help her cholesterol, triglycerides and her B12 level. I would HIGHLY suggest you go to http://www.drmcdougall.com/ and look up those things individually. He goes into great depth about each one and how to lower them eating a plant based (vegan) diet. He also has many sections dedicated to the gluten free lifestyle along with it. My guess is your daughter might be ingesting many processed foods and although they may be vegan they may not be healthy. My 14 year old daughter was doing the same and I had her watch Processed People and look through Doctor McDougall's website and she is doing much better. Who does not love soy ice cream, frito's and all of those foods but they are high in fat and cholesterol. There are plenty of vegan B12 supplements available as well as using nutritional yeast to sprinkle on your food without going to shots (although if she is really low they may help build up her stores and then you can supplement). In my own personal opinion you could help her lower her own cholesterol through eating a diet such as Dr. McDougall or Dr. Furhman suggest. Dr. McDougall's website is completely free and he has a free program you can do as well as use his forum for free and he even replies to all emails as does his nutritionist Jeff Novak who is also wonderful. Dr. Furhman's website is pretty limited unless you join for a fee which bothers me. They both have great books you can get free from the library and Dr. McDougall has several of his videos free on his website to watch. So many doctors are so uneducated in True nutrition and they all fall prey to the same advertising and preaching so many others do by the dairy, meat and packaging companies they don't really know anything about nutrition. Good luck to you and your daughter and i hope I did not come across rude or preachy just passionate about it. Guest guest
Lisa, having a low B12 when eating a vegetarian or vegan diet is not a surprise. All vegetarians need to supplement B12. Even people who eat animal products sometimes need to do so, for better absorption. After she's done her course of shots, she will need to continue taking a regular supplement. You too. How does the doctor know her cholesterol went up? Had he taken a measurement previously with which he was comparing? It is normal for cholesterol levels to drop after giving up animal products. If she was eating a standard gluten free diet (lots of meat and dairy) before going vegan recently, her cholesterol level would be expected to be high at the beginning. It typically takes a month or so for the cholesterol level to drop after giving up all animal products. I would suggest getting a new doctor, ideally one who understands and follows vegan diet personally. They may be relatively yet but they do exist! Human metabolism runs primarily on carbohydrates; we all need to consume complex carbohydrates to maintain good levels of energy. There are many gluten free grains (quinoa, teff, buckwheat, millet, rice) which you and your daughter can enjoy on a gluten free, vegan diet. If you daughter is of child-bearing age, it is especially important that she avoid consuming quantities of fish. http://www.bayareaveg.org/articles/But_you_eat_Fish_don't_you.htm Wishing you all the best, Deborah My daughter has been gluten free for 15 years. Guest guest
My daughter had cholesterol of 180 a year ago and now it is 230 and she adopted the vegan lifestyle 6+ months ago. It does seem strange, but true. The numbers on the test indicate that she was eating too many carbs for her body. I confirmed the diagnosis with a completely different doctor as a second opinion. I didn't know about the b12 issue and I will have to see if it is included in my current supplements. As far as lowering my daughter's cholesterol and helping her lose 15-20 pounds is the current challenge. I checked out the Macdougall website and just d to the newsletter. It does not seem as though he focuses on weight loss at all. It would be wonderful if we could focus on both issues at the same time. I appreciate all of the ideas and opinions you are sending me. It seems like there is not going to be an easy solution. Lisa In a message dated 6/18/2009 8:37:53 P.M. Guest guest
Miriam, I am a huge fan of Dr. Fuhrman. I have introduced his book to my daughter and we even try to follow his nutrarian diet. I will bring his book to the doctor we are currently seeing and get her to integrate the theories. Lisa In a message dated 6/18/2009 8:37:48 P.M. Guest guest
Lisa, I suggest you check out Dr. Fuhrman's web site. He is a board certified family physician in New Jersey, a vegan, and he treats people with high cholesterol while helping them to stay on the vegan diet. http://www.drfuhrman.com/ is his web page. http://www.amazon.com/Cholesterol-Protection-Life-New-Expanded/dp/0974463329/ref\ =sr_1_9?ie=UTF8 & s=books & qid=1245363531 & sr=8-9 this is link to his cholesterol book. He has several others. He is not himself gluten free but many many of his recipes are. I am not an affiliate of his, just a grateful fan. Guest guest
Lisa, Dr. McDougall definitely focuses on weight loss and that is what his clinic is all about in CA. If you type in weight loss in his search you will get a lot of info. More than half of his books focus on weight loss and helping people recover from that as well as high cholesterol and many other typical American diseases just as Dr. Fuhman does. They are both wonderful doctors and preach almost the same thing other than Dr. Mcdougall preaches that starch is a great thing along with the plant based (potatoes, rice, quiona, cous cous etc) and Dr. Fuhman believes in limiting it but otherwise both vegan and helping people recover from illness and stay healthy. You would do well with either doctor, I just like Dr. Mcdougall because he has replied to ever email I have sent him and his forum is free and wonderful. You might want to click his contact me page and email him your question that you posted here and see what he says. I'm sure he will give you lots of info. Let us know how it goes Kim On Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 11:14 AM, Deborah Pageau <dpageau wrote: > > > Lisa, having a low B12 when eating a vegetarian or vegan diet is not a > surprise. Guest guest
why are beans and nuts not good for your daughter if she is being told to eat energy bars which often contain soybeans and nuts? if she is gluten free and vegan, beans and nuts are great foods for her. is there some other condition she has? could she start by being an ovolacto vegetarian?why does she have to eat animals if she doesnt want to? could you ask your doctor about eggwhites and cottage cheese which are low fat and high protein? wondering why the leap to animals was made without considering other options. was she considering her proteins and taking vitamins when she went vegan? maybe that's the only change necessary..... time for a second medical opinion, i would think. -- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ just posted GLUTEN FREE VEGETARIAN 2-MINUTE SOUP www.wheatlessandmeatless.com +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Guest guest
High cholesterol can be caused by thyroid or diabetes, both of which can go with celiac. Cholesterol usually drops on a vegan diet, so I would be looking for the cause (could also be genetic) rather than just assuming she should eat fish/meat, which will only raise cholesterol more. B12 can definitely be caused by celiac, and vegans need to supplement B12 if they do not have enough stores in their body. Triglycerides can rise on a vegan diet if (a) too much fruit or (b) not enough omega 3 fatty acids. It could also be caused by whatever is causing her high cholesterol. I very much doubt that her carbs are too high. If she's eating too many refined/processed foods, then it could be too high in sugar, fat, etc., but whole plant foods containing complex carbs are very good for you and include sufficient protein for human health. Read up on Dr. McDougall or others who are experts in reversing heart disease with low fat vegan diets. Most doctors in general practice do not have any nutritional training, especially for dealing with vegans or celiacs. You might see if a nutritionist could help, though some of them are pretty ignorant as well. Pam On Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 9:04 AM, <lisasark wrote: My daughter has been gluten free for 15 years.
