I posted here some time ago regarding RA and diet. I have had RA for 10 years,

have taken anti inflams, Panadol and Codeine in spite of being diagnosed with

severe RA have not moved on to methotrexate or the harder drugs. I was

diagnosed finally with gluten sensitivity late last year and have stuck to a g/f

vegan diet for this year. Am a long time vegetarian who has had too much dairy

over the years. My inflammation rate is normal but I still flare, quite severely

but they only last 24 hrs. I am still flaring quite frequently. Is this pattern

familiar to anyone. I dont quite understand what is happening.

Also I have low grade infections which I believe are common to RA but would like

to boost my immune system to stop this happening. Any advice for me please.

Sherene I read your post on RA with interest and wonder if I am not getting

enough nutrients. I have quite a small appetite, a lot of fatigue and while I

am g/f and vegan dont take in a lot of food.

I dont think I would feel happy about taking fish oil from an ethical position -

I am not convinced fish oil is healthy anyway but it does cross my mind at

times, pain can be so wearying. Can you tell me what you would eat over a few

days please.

Any help from here would be appreciated.

I can only comment on what I do per Dr Fuhrman's prescription. I know

it worked for me. I have normal blood tests and the only time I flare

is if I eat one of the forbidden foods. If I skip the fish oil (like

I tried to do on and off this year), my asthma flares, I develop bad

seasonal allergies, I struggle with allergic folliculitis, my dry eye

becomes very bad, I sink into a deep depression and I get sore

joints. I've tried vegan DHA and it made no difference. my quality

of life is so poor without the fish oil that I overcame my ethical

objections to the stuff

here's my daily diet.

======

Breakfast - a smoothie. I am a boring eater and eat the same breakfast

day after day.

I make a huge smoothie in a Vitamix.

1 cup each frozen blueberries and cherries

8 oz frozen spinach

third of a bunch of watercress (add far less if you are new to the

stuff)

1 tablespoon flax, chia or hemp seeds

water to get things moving.

I crave this smoothie. I switch out the spinach for kale or collards

sometimes.

plus a glass of juiced cruciferous greens. I make up a quart at a

time. I generally use kale, collards, beet, some grapes, an apple,

celery and cucumber

LUNCH - salad made from finely shredded spring mix, arugula and

watercress. Shredded red cabbage. Spring onion or vidalia onion,

sometimes broccoli slaw. sliced banana and some raw sunflower seeds. I

like to dress it with a dressing I make by blending 1 cup water, 1/2

cup cashews, 2 tablespoons sodium free dijon mustard, 4 tablespoons

lemon juice, some roasted garlic. this makes enough dressing for a

week.

Soup made with cruciferous greens.

DINNER

tonight I had warm curried cauliflower salad with the same salad as

lunch but this time I used an apple, not a banana.

Last night I had a great mushroom stew with the same salad but this

time dressed it with a pea and cilantro dressing and added avocado to

it.

used my fruit in a mango sorbet ( just pureed frozen mango with banana)

The night before I made aloo gobi burgers (but subbed the potato with

cauliflower) on a bed of arugula and watercress with a mango and

cilantro dressing

drink a glass of cruciferous juice as I make dinner

Am fasting for the next three days. I try to fast every 2-3 weeks.

just drink water. it does wonders for inflammation. I had some cake

this week and my hands are hurting from the sugar. a short fast will

fix it very quickly.

Does that help?

-Thanks so much Sherene.

I try to take in 5 or 6 fruit and veg a day but your intake seems to be much

higher. I will try to up my fruit and veg. I am so attached to food, sigh.

How long have you been in remission.

I also have been looking at LDN after my dr. recommended it but I am so wary of

medication it will be a last resort.

Where do you get your recipes from. Are they from the files here.

Do you eat pulses, any grains at all.

I need some mainmeal suggestions please if possible.

Thanks again.

Many thanks.

my fruit intake is limited to 3 fruits a day (the two cups of berries

in my morning smoothie count as one fruit) and I try to stick to low

GI fruits.

The key to treating RA with food is a very high intake of cruciferous

veg. you need to juice them as well as it is impossible to eat as

much as you need. you need to saturate your body's tissues with

phytonutrients. The nutrients from cruciferous veg heal dna damage

I don't eat grains iin the normal course of my life because I am

supersensitive to them. I'll only eat them one in a while.

I do eat beans, but I keep them to less than a cup a day and don't eat

them daily. There were beans in some of the dinner meals I listed. I

find beans can give me problems if I eat too many of them.

Hi,

I haven't posted here ever...I'm always trying to gain knowledge and learn from

others experiences. I'm also on the

" LDN lowdosenaltrexone " . I always see many people posting about RA.

I'm on there bc of MS but I have read that LDN has helped many RA sufferers. LDN

is for cancer & many other autoimmune diseases incl. autism. Seems to be a

fascinating discovery. I've been on LDN for about a week so it is too soon to

tell you if I feel better. I need to give it some months to take charge. Sorry I

can't give you much more info for I am still learning & wouldn't want to mislead

you. You can also google " LDN and RA " to see what type of info you get or sign

up to that . I believe you'll learn lots for there's many there that

have lots of knowledge to help you & answer your questions. Make sure you

research LDN & if you decide to start on it maybe alot of your pain will be

alleviated. Just don't give up hope. Hang in there.

Oh and you'll get lots of info on the types of food diet you can do to benefit

your situation.

God Bless~

Eleni

Fish oil is recommended for the omega fatty acids. Hemp contains all the

omegas and is a healthy vegan alternative to fish oil. I drink chocolate

hemp milk for the omegas.

As for inflammation, lemon tea in the morning and valerian root tablets

before bed help me a lot. Sometimes I take the valerian in the afternoon as

well if the pain gets really bad. I have unexplainable cronic pain in all

the bones of my right leg, all my joints, and pain is spreading to other

bones. Before I started taking the valerian I couldn't stand or walk most

days for the pain! http://www.wonderlabs.com/muscle-spasms/index.html

Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Selenium where recommended to me by my GI doctor. I

have not found a vegan vitamin E as a stand alone pill. I had an unusual

reaction to selenium so I can't take that. Vitamin C does help the immune

system. Echinasea tea when you feel something coming on will boost you

immune system to help fight it off. You don't want to use it continuously

though because it will become ineffective after about 3 months of continuous

use.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I will up my cruciferous veg and try your diet Sherene.

Also like the sound of Valerian for pain - I have some valerian for insomnia,

didnt think about pain relief. Is the lemon tea you mention Jae lemon slices in

hot water or similar?

LDN I am not so sure about. Dont feel there has been enough research regarding

LDN - it sounds great but..... I will exhaust natural methods first and see how

it goes.

From all the books and research I have read on RA it seems to me the common

denominator for a cure is a diet high in nutrients even though there are

variations in the diets.

Thanks again everyone, always good advice and support from this site.

I usually just buy lemon herbal tea bags, but you could make your own tea

with fresh lemons. You could also drink a glass of cold water with lemon

juice squeezed into it, if you prefer it that way.
