Molasses should be gf. It's a byproduct of making white sugar from sugar cane.

Some people who have trouble with gluten can't tolerate oatmeal though. The

gluten in oatmeal is different enough from that in wheat that many people can

tolerate oats. I did fine with it for many years but with age, I have had to

stop eating it. If you have been feeling a bit " off " , you might need to

reconsider oatmeal.

does molasses have gluten? if not, the oatmeal I've been eating this week is

contaminated.

no molasses should not have gluten. It might not be that the oats are

contaminated, just that you aren't able to tolerate the oat protein

either. I have a very similar reaction to avioine (oat protein) that

I do to gluten. Just because the oats are certified gf doesn't mean

you won't react to the protein separate from gluten. It's common for

people who have a sensitivity to gluten to not be able to tolerate oat

protein.

I am sorry to hear that you are reacting though.

In the ingredients does it say Natural Flavors or Modified Food Starch?

Those can possibly contain gluten and you'd want to call the company to

inquire.

There is corn in molasses so it's possible your starting to have problems

with corn. I've been have some mild problems with corn, particularly

modified corn starch. I keep denying it because I really don't want to give

up another food source, but I have been cutting way back on my corn intake.

I know you probably don't want to here this possibility either, but it is

something to consider. A lot of celiacs have been having problems with corn

and I honestly believe it's because of all the engineering and manipulation

that's been going on to expand the quantity and make more profit. Once your

system clears up, test a couple corn products to see if you notice and

problems. Then you'll know for sure!

Did you buy certified GF oats? If they are certified GF there shouldn't be a

problem with them, however, some people still have issues with oats and

can't eat them even though they are GF.

I have developed a lot more sensitivites and allergies over the past 2

years, so don't think because it didn't bother you before that it's safe.

You may need to do an elimination/challenge diet again to rule out some

foods. You have narrowed it down to corn an oats as possible problems,

assuming there's no gluten in the products. First call the companies and

make sure there's no gluten. If they are safe then test yourself with corn

and oats. If you rule them out then you have to start looking at additives,

coloring, and anything else you ate that could have been a problem.

I had vegetable sushi the other day that caused a reaction. They didn't

clean the work area in between making the fish sushi's and the vegetable

only sushi's and I got some shrimp juice that broke me out into hives! So if

you ate out at all, be cautious of cross contamination that way too!

It can be a pain trying to narrow it down, especially when there's the

possibility of having to give up yet another food. It's worth it though to

avoid future ills!

Good luck!

molasses can also be sorghum, so that gives you three possible sources, as

well as possibly reacting to the oat protein itself.

it is Brer Rabbit blackstrap molasses, the only ingredient is unsulphured

molasses, and the label even states 'gluten-free.' I suspect the oats, as it

was a cheap brand; (box long gone) I had no problem earlier this month eating

other brands of oatmeal.

thanks for all the answers.
