Guest guest
on twitter today i was sad to see the confusion between wheatfree and gluten free. someone recommended fig bars from the famous brand Barbara's Bakery as being better than their gluten free original. being an old fig newton fan from age eight or so, i checked it out. sadly, right on their website: http://bit.ly/oU0BF it states the bars have barley flour and are listed in their wheat free category, not their gluten free category. so even when the manufacturer does everything right there is still the chance of contamination by lack of understanding. being a full celiac, that would be very dangerous for me, but even others with intolerance or sensitivity to have this clarified to them by a physician, i think. of course, that is all too rare....mostly, i guess, it is the patient enlghtening the doctor about all this....sigh.... -- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ just posted for the 4th: THE FIESTA CASSEROLE http://www.wheatlessandmeatless.com/ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Guest guest
I think a big part of the confusion comes from many people loosely using the term wheat free to explain gluten free to somehow simplify it for the masses. That mentality only complicates things further and it becomes quite frustrating. I'm in Pittsburgh, and wheat free seems to be the term of choice here at many places and most people who do not personally have to deal with it are oblivious to the difference and many seem unwilling to even listen to an explanation! Even my friends and family who try get confused and buy me things that I can't eat but they thought it was safe because they asked the clerk or manager and then we have to go through what the problem is and why I can't have it again! I keep asking everybody to not buy me food because of that reason! I appreciate the thought but I know the workers in the stores are clueless and if your already confused and the terminology is used loosely to confuse even more, how are people suppose to understand and be supportive? Another thing that's been going on to make the whole situation even worse is some companies are experimenting with removing gluten from barley malt, which even when it's undetectable the gluten is still there and causing problems for celiacs. Regardless, it adds a new level of confusion, especially to our friends and family who don't fully understand, because they see barley malt and gluten free on a product and then they think, oh barley is safe! But it's not! Most of the companies that started this have stopped because of the confusion and celiacs complaining of reactions. Be very cautious of these products when you see them though, because even though they are tested to 20ppm, most celiacs have reactions! Guest guest
you know i think there's an irony i want you to know i'm aware of, that i started this thread about the confusion between wheatfree and glutenfree and my site is called meatlessandwheatless when i not only avoid meat but fish and poultry too and i not only avoid wheat but rye barley and uncertified oats, too. so, no one's perfect, that's for sure!!! (but i still think beyond zeppy tag lines, in serious discussions, people should, for their health, know the difference) -- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 2009 FANCY FOOD SHOW, NYC http://www.wheatlessandmeatless.com/ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Guest guest
Absolutely! And it's entirely up to the individual to know the difference and continuously double check everything! An exhausting task, but you just can't trust other people to know and make sure something is safe for you!
