Guest guest
Hi there, I'm struggling to find face care products that are good for sensitive skin as well as minor adult acne. The dermatologist has at times prescribed really strong prescription stuff and it's just too much for me. I'd prefer a more natural approach, but I have no idea where to start! Any recommendations? Thanks for your help! Zoe
Guest guest
I've found that betadine skin cleanser has helped with my dermatitis, as well as good old-fashioned hydrogen peroxide and Neosporin. None are terribly expensive, and being over-the-counter, don't require a prescription. Diet also has a part, as my food allergens often cause pimples. Peanut butter is definitely one of those, and having lived on it as a kid, my teen years were a saga of acne. Be well, DDP
Guest guest
If your interested in making your own products, here are a few recipes from the Herbal Body Book by Stephanie Tourles *Acne Astringent* 1 TBLS (15 ml) yarrow 1 TBLS (15 ml) calendula or chamomile 2 cups (473 ml) distilled water 15 drops tincture of benzoin 6 drops essential oil of peppermint Bring water to boil. Remove from heat and add herbs. Cover and steep for 30 minutes. Strain. Add tincture of benzoin and peppermint oil. Store. Use 1 tsp (5 ml) per application. Refrigerate. yields approx 96 treatments Good for daily use.Store in bottle or spritzer. Shake before use. Follow with moisturizer. *pH Restorer* 2 cups (473 ml) distilled water 1/4 cup (59 ml) apple cider vinegar 10 drops favorite essential oil---try lavender, lemon or rose Combine ingredients and store. Use approx. 1 TBLS (15 ml) per application. Splash it on if you wish. The vinegar will help combat the alkaline residue that soap and cleansers can leave behind. When your skin maintains the correct pH (5.5), it has a much better chance of fighting off infections. Requires no refridgeration. yields approx. 32 treatments Good for daily use.Store in bottle or spritzer. Shake before use. Follow with moisturizer. *Gentle Facial Exfoliant* 2 TBLS (30 ml) powdered milk* (use a non dairy such as soy or rice, or hemp powder) 1/2 cup (118 ml) ground oatmeal 1 tsp (5 ml) cornmeal water Mix dry ingredients thoroughly. Combine 1 TBLS (15 ml) of scrub mixture with enough water to form a spreadable paste. Allow to thicken for 1 minute. Massage onto face and thoat. Rinse. yields approx. 10 treatments Use daily or as needed. Store in zip seal bag, low tub/jar, or tin. Follow with moisturizer. *If oatmeal or corn are an issue, sub similar but safe ingredients. If oatmeal can't be used, try adding some epsom salt as it helps draw out toxins and is healing and soothing to the skin as well. Guest guest
I have very sensitive skin and have been diagnosed over the years with various skin " conditions " by lots of dermatologists. After many years of trying different products, prescriptions (I've done it all, including accutane) and cutting certain foods out of my diet, I've found the best approach is to keep it as simple as possible and keep the face washing/touching/products to a minimum. Sensitive skin and exfoliation are extremely tricky when mixed. It can exacerbate acne and make it worse. Also, I know this one is obvious, but drink lots of water. At the very least, you'll get that lovely, model-like dewiness to your skin I've also done a ton of research on the sorts of crap manufacturers put into our body care products and have been appalled by the fact that many are known carcinogens. As suggested by another poster, you can make your own products, which is certainly the " safest " bet considering you have control of what you put on your skin. However, I personally am too lazy. There are two skin care lines that I've had the best luck with: Origins (specifically the Dr. Weil line) and Avalon Organics (the Vitamin C line for face). I personally am not a vegan, so you may need to check ingredients in that respect. But both of those lines follow the EU Cosmetics directive, " The EU has banned more than 1,300 ingredients that are known or strongly suspected of causing cancer, birth defects or fertility problems. " Not all products in the 2 lines I mention are free of all ingredients so just like with eating gluten-free and reading ingredients, it's best to always do that with personal care products as well. I'd look for products that are free of the following: Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) Sodium Lauryl/laureth Sulfates Mineral Oil Phthalates (also known as synthetic fragrances) PABA DEA Anyways, that's just my two cents on skin care. I have found that by switching out the harsh detergent stuff on the market for the products that are natural, organic (at times) and free of the above, my skin is quite happy and I haven't needed any additional helps to keep it in line. Here's a link with more info about safe cosmetics. http://www.safecosmetics.org/article.php?list=type & type=33 Good luck!
