Guest guest
I purchased a vita mixer and I must confess that I am very unhappy with it. For me, it is just a glorified blender. I know people rave about it as a food processor, but every time I have tried to use it to make almond butter or mix cake batter it overheats and shuts off. I have followed the directions regarding the variable speed dial . I use the tamper and I have tried the 4/5 as suggested in the guidebook. I tried higher speeds and even slower speeds which is supposed to " allow the food to circulate when higher speeds do not " Nothing seems to work, therefore I only use it for smoothies. It has been a huge disappointment. I feel like I was duped and wasted my hard earned money. I found that using it to make hummus, the cleanup was a pain because you can't remove the bottom. I am certain that many of you love your vita mixer so please enlighten me so that I can enjoy and fully appreciate mine too. Thanks, Lisa **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Guest guest
I have a blendtec which I guess is similar to the vita. My friend has the vita - so when I offered to bring over my blendtec and fruits for smoothies she refused. I can say that mine is fully automatic and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!! A lot of the issues you are having are also the reasons she doesn't use hers anymore. SORRY! I believe they may be more pricey than the vita mixer ones but my mother and I have them and when we took mom's out of the box we tried 20 different recipes from the recipe book and others we created in the first 48 hours we had it opened! Guest guest
I wasn't sure about the prices - I know that Blendtec is about $400 on the website and I paid $370 at Costco. My friend who has the vita mixer said that she paid just over $200 for hers but she got it at a Navy Exchange..so I wasn't sure what the retail price was! I know that now between using the two - I would only have the blendtec! Guest guest
I love my Vitamix and use it multiple times a day. However, I don't make any cake like things in it except black bean brownies. I make hummus in it all the time. Clean up is a breeze. Put a little water in it and blend. toss it out and rinse. then put a little more water in it and a drop of soap, blend. and voila, the jug is all clean. This was in the instruction manual btw. We drink a lot of smoothies with spinach, kale or collards in them and the only way to make them smooth is to use the Vitamix. I never make nut butters but do make nut based ice creams and salad dressings successfully. I suggest reading the manual again and speaking to one of their demonstrators with specific concerns Shez

Guest guest
Funny, the vita mix guy was at my local costco a month ago and i asked him my questions about making nut butters and the bean dips. He suggested I put more ingredients in rather than less. It made no difference. The mixer just can't handle much more than fluids. Interesting that they don't make anything thick in their demos. Guest guest
Hi Diana, I have a thick three ring binder. That is where I got some of the recipe ideas and the instructions. I quoted some of their statements in my email to Vita Mix. I wrote a month ago and never got a response so I decided to try again yesterday when I was absolutely frustrated. It is easy to make vegetable and fruit drinks, but I was hoping to make more than beverages and soups. I wanted to make the batters. There is a whole chapter about batters. I also wanted to be able to make bean dips. My family loves them, but they get pushed to the side of the blender and I could do almost the same thing by hand. I was making one of my raw food recipes last night. A recipe that calls for chopped nuts (I used almonds that I had to grind in a food processor) and dates, cocao powder, vanilla and some water. I almost melted the machine when I decided to move from the food processor to the vita mixer. I was told by the costco demo guy that it only works when there is enough stuff to blend. Since I had way too much for my food processor and if was filled over half way I thought the vita mixer would do the trick, but it just heated up the motor and shut down before anything could get chopped up. I did it according to the instructions for a thick batter. I ended up transferring the mixture in batches to the food processor so that I could make the flourless " cake " My daughter has tried making banana bread and the same thing happened. I don't want you to think that I am going blind here. I bought my vita mixer new - I watched the video and read the literature and cookbook. Either I am completely missing something or the machine isn't as versatile as they claim. Thank you everyone for trying so hard to help me. I will continue to make my protein shakes, fruit smoothies and green juices, but I was hoping for so much more when i bought the machine. Lisa In a message dated 8/3/2009 3:40:41 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, allegria47 writes: Did you not receive the cook book with your Vita Mix? It has all kind of recipes for all kinds of foods. I bought one because my blender could not sufficiently cut up green vegies for our green drinks. Nor could the other blenders break up the hemp seeds, chia seeds, etc. The Vita Mixer turns them to powder in a few seconds. Sorry I don't recall which speed I put the dial on. I started with the switch on low then went to high but the powder flew all over the contain interior so I lowered it again to low. As I say I've just received it and we're just starting to experiment. Guest guest
Thanks for the info. The more I read the more I realize I don't need another blender. With my $20 blender I have made hummus, wonderful smoothies and milkshakes, pesto and all kinds of stuff that comes out perfect! Clean up is easy and you can't beat the price! I started getting brainwashed by all the advertising but this conversation has brought me back down to earth. I can't cook soup in my blender, but I'm not big on soups and have no real need for that feature! So I'm content with what I have! Thanks! Guest guest
Did you not receive the cook book with your Vita Mix? It has all kind of recipes for all kinds of foods. I bought one because my blender could not sufficiently cut up green vegies for our green drinks. Nor could the other blenders break up the hemp seeds, chia seeds, etc. The Vita Mixer turns them to powder in a few seconds. Sorry I don't recall which speed I put the dial on. I started with the switch on low then went to high but the powder flew all over the contain interior so I lowered it again to low. As I say I've just received it and we're just starting to experiment.
