getting enough protein isn't the issue

Here's the latest on the theme of " getting enough protein isn't a problem,

getting too much, is " . This is a quote from Dr. Luigi Fontana, MD, PhD from the

2008 issue of " Aging Cell " , in which research is published for the edification

of the medical community. This is consistent with other research suggesting

that limiting overall caloric intake to minimum has a similarly beneficial

effect. :-)

Quote: " .our data provide evidence that protein intake is a key determinant of

circulating IGF-1 levels in humans, and suggest that reduced protein intake may

become an important component of anticancer and anti-aging dietary

interventions. " This quote was in a recent newsletter from Dr. John McDougall,

announcing Fontana's lecture at an event in September.

They may be on to something with the anti-aging effects of lower protein

diets. I have always eaten a low protein diet simply because of health

issues and getting sick if I eat too much protein. I'm going to be 31 next

month and last week, yet again, I was mistaken as a teenager! I've even had

kids ask me if I'm an adult or a teenager because I look too young to be an

adult. It's frustrating, especially when my hubby is mistaken as my father!

I'm sure in another 10 years or so when I look 20ish it won't be so bad! lol

It's not genetics because as far as I know everyone in my family ages

normally, or fast. A lot of smokers, all meat eaters, many diabetics. I

don't smoke, I eat healthy (as healthy as I can...about 600 calories a day),

and I don't get stressed out. Stress is a big factor in aging too! My aunt

has been so stressed out the past 5 years over her job that she now looks

older than my mother who is 3 years older than her! I'm sure diet plays a

big role in that too! You can't live on McDonalds and KFC and expect to be

healthy! Somehow though, everyone who does seems to think they should be

healthier than they are. =I

In case anyone is interested, T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. (author of The China

Study), is giving a webinar on the topic of protein for $10, on Aug 25

He has written eloquently on how misled the American public has been by the

" protein requirements " set forth by most standard dietary advice.

my doctor wants to put me on several medications because my cholesterol and

triglycerides are so high. I don't want to be on the medications... I have a

friend who started a vegan diet a few months ago and her cholesterol dropped

by 40 pts. I am to the point I'm willing to try a vegan (and gluten

free/casein free/soy free) diet, but I don't have a clue where to begin.

Any advice for a beginner. I'm feeling very overwhelmed.

A vegan diet really does help, and gives you many more benefits then just

lowered numbers, and it doesn't have toxic side effects of the medication.

Here are some things that have helped us.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman's books, such as Eat to Live.

The Coranary Health Improvement Project http://www.chipusa.org/. See if there

is a session happening near you. It is worth the money. Many insurance

companies will reimburse you for the cost of the program. My husband went

through it right after he had a heart attack (age 46), and it helped him make

some big changes in his diet and his life that we are all following now.

There are many blogs that might be of help. You can start with mine, and there

are some links to other vegan blogs. www.wildflowermorningrecipes.blogspot.com

But I think the big thing is to think about what fruits and veggies you love

already, and start to eat lots of them. Make big salads and put yummy low fat

dressings on them. Add more and more fruits and veggies as you can.

I wish you the best as you transition to better health.

My cholesterol and triglycerides have always been high, yet several doctors

have said it's imposible considering my diet! I don't believe medication

would help and my doctors agreed. Try following the diet, if your levels

don't drop then there has to be a physiological reason for it. I have

chronic pancreatitis which is suspected as the cause for my high levels.

Cyctic Fibrosis, even minor mutations of the CF gene that do not present

typical symptoms can affect your levels for seemingly no cause. Diet is the

best place to start though. Even if the diet doesn't seem to help your

levels, it will help your overall health and help prevent issues like

clogged atreries that are commonly associated with high cholesterol.

I see there is a lot of great advice out there already for you, but

on top of Dr. McDougall - eliminate all sugar - white sugar, maple

syrup, evaporated cane sugar, etc. That is the only way I was able

to get my triglycerides down. My chlesterol went down very quickly

on a low fat vegan diet, but I was eating a lot of sugar too so my

triglicerides stayed high. Oh - and incorporate a green smoothie in

your breakfast - it is a great way to start the day and might even

make it so you do not need your cup of coffee. Victoria Boutenko

has a lot of great info on green smoothies and you may even be able

to get Green for Life through your local library. Good luck!

I also follow much of McDougall's plan, and like how it is 'eat all you want, of

the right foods.' if you want direction, you might pick up his book The

McDougall Program; (which I often find at Half-Price Books) though it's not GF,

is easily adaptable. For those who desire a regimen, there is a twelve-day diet

complete with shopping list; you are invited to change it up or repeat meals.

Congratulations on your decision to change- my body has been so much happier

since I did. Good luck!

Great news because I'm 5-9 too! (We can't help it if we're super models) There

must be hope for me and apparently I needn't worry about protein. My GP is

always stressing protein because I'm vegan. It gets so tiring.

You've gotten good advice from many. When my family startedthe vegan part of our

diet I went to my library and got a bunchof books with vegan recipes - even the

gluten free vegan book :o)

Dr. McDougall is on my list to read next. We started with TheChina Study, then

read Dr. Esselstyn's book (great recipes included!).Good luck! It has been much

easier than I ever imagined.

Years ago, Dr. McDougall posted a challenge to any dietitican or doctor to prove

to him that there is a vegan diet, with a normal degree of variety and based on

whole foods, that doesn't provide more enough protein. As far as I know, no one

has ever succeeded in meeting that challenge, and it has been up for over 20

years.

If your GP won't let up on that issue, I suggest that you put the oneous on him,

say something like " Look, if you are so worried about me not getting enough

protein, I DARE you to prove to me that I'm not. " Provide him with a few days

menues and make HIM calculate the protein content. That would probably cool his

jets. :-)

This is a great website for figuring out your calories for the day

and where they are coming from - I would switch doctors before

trying to prove something to a doctor. If you do not agree on this

and he/she does not have an open mind on this, what else will they

nay say about? http://www.nutritiondata.com/ Anyway - I used this

for my son when we figured out that he was getting plenty of calories

and from great resources, but he could not digest them all due to his

gluten intolerance. It gave me piece of mind. It also helped when I

went to a predominately raw diet to help me realize that I am fine

with my nutrition for the day eating a whole food plant based diet -

even as a lactating mother, I get more than enough vitamins, minerals

and amino acids eating what I eat - I do supplement B12 though.

Wow! What is the purpose in eating so few calories? How can that be healthy?

Seems like a diet that low in calories would be severely lacking in nutrients.

You must be skin and bones. What do you eat? Can you post a day's (or few day's)

menus? Do you weigh and measure everything to be sure you don't exceed that many

calories? How long have you been limiting your calories so severely?

If I ate no more than that, I think I'd be so weak I couldn't walk or do much of

anything else. Energy comes from the foods we eat. I would be nervous and shaky,

I'm sure.

Sorry for all the questions, but I just find this amazing.

I had the same concern - I had heard we need a minimum of 600 - 800

calories a day just to maintain our vital systems and keep the heart

pumping. I had always thought lower than 1200 calories for most

adults was too low - except of course for an occasional fast.

I actually struggle to get that many calories and really try hard to get

more. I'm not deliberately trying to eat very little, I just physically

can't handle a lot of food. Oddly I weigh more than the little charts at the

doctors says I should and even though a lot of my levels are low my PCP

thinks I'm eating too much! Can you believe that???

I have chronic pancreatitis, I get gastritis frequently, I'm always

nauseated, and experiance a great deal of pain after eating. I'm far from

healthy but in comparison with relatives I'm the healthiest! Scary, I know!

If I ate meat, dairy, etc I'd be completely unable to function at all! When

I first got sick I was on a liquid diet and for about 2 or so years I was

only getting about 200 calories a day into me and that was a struggle! I am

pretty weak and I don't have a lot of energy. Everything is a struggle! I

have been studying and trying all holistic modalities for years now and I

have seen some improvement. I doubt I will ever get to a point where I'm

truly healthy, but any improvement is better than none!

Typically, I'll have 4 oz hemp milk in the morning (breakfast), then I drink

water all day, around 2pm I have my 1 meal a day which if I don't feel up to

cooking I make an Amy's meal in the microwave (about 1/3 of goes to my

chihuahua because she has to share plus I can't finish it all!) Sometimes

I'll have a salad and if I feel I can handle the protein I'll put nuts or

tofu on it. Sometimes I'll saute up a bunch of veggies make a nice melady

and that feeds me for a week! Same when I make a pizza, it's for the week!

Then in the evening I'll have some juice or hemp milk if I'm up to it, but

usually I live on water. I have been trying that fruitsense vitamin water

which is ok. I figure it's better than plain water and gives me a few more

calories a day. I'll only have 8 oz of that because I don't want to load up

on sugar. Today I'm having left over mashed potatoes with carmalized onions

and mushrooms, or at least that's the plan. Still feeling quite ill so it

may end up being a just water day! I have a lot of those, so even less

calories! But I eat too much because I'm over weight! :P

I am mostly skin and bones! The weight is all in my abdomen. You'd think

someone who went to med school would have a clue, but then there's no profit

to be had from dietary knowledge, unless they can prescribe diet pills. I

just say say to the doctor it must be all the water I drink. Water is very

fattening you know! lol

If you are retaining weight, it could be that your body has slowed

its metablosim for fear it does not know when or where the next

calories will come from. It sounds counterintuitive, but you have to

eat to loose weight. So sorry you are having these problems. I used

to have severe health problems too - I tried a raw vegan diet for a

few months and it helped. Now i et no refined or packaged products,

about 75% raw fruit and veggies and the other cooked foods are beans

or potatoes.

That's absolutely what's happening! Doctors seem too stupid to figure it out

though so I respond with equally ridiculous notions such as water is

fattening! At least I have fun with it all! I'm trying to slowly work my

intake up. I've been checking out smoothie recipes and I'm going to get some

hemp protein powder on my next trip to whole foods. I'm thinking if I go to

a mostly liquid diet I should be able to handle more because my body won't

have to do much. The last time I did a smoothie diet I was only around 400

calories but I was still really sick and vomiting a lot back then. The raw

diet didn't work for me before, being severely anemic, I was frozen to my

marrow! I've been thinking of giving it a try again since getting the IV

iron I seen overheated most of the time now. There's just no happy medium!

I know I don't get enough nutrition because even though I don't experience

hunger in my stomach, I do feel hunger pains in my cells. It's sounds weird

and it is very weird! Doctors look at me like I'm crazy, but in my muscles,

my veins, etc I literally feel my body crying for food and I so want to give

it food! I asked my GI for IV nourishment to help and his response was your

overweight your nourished enough! Quit looking at the darn scale and open a

pathology book! They hate me too because I take then tons of copies of

medical stuff to read, which they probably just toss out. That's why I'm

primarily my own doctor! I go and get my blood work yearly and whatever else

I need from them, and the rest of it I figure out on my own. I do have a

degree in holistic health so it's not like I'm randomly taking herbs and

vitamins talked about in magazines and hoping for the best! I know some one

like that and I nearly died when she told me all the herbs and medications

she was mixing! Some of which could have been fatal to her! And she told her

PCP everything she was taking and wasn't warned or cautioned about any of

it! I hate doctors! They make my skin crawl! I'm shutting up now before I

get on a soap box again! ;)

My morning smoothie is about 500 calories and I used to be anemic.

If you add plenty of greens to your smoothies, that should help your

iron - I take no supplements anymore and eat between 8 oz to 20 oz of

dark leafy greens per day - mostly in salads. It may be worth

picking up Green for Life by Viktoria Boutenko. I have heard some

people say they do not respond well to a raw diet, but most of those

have also been eating very smal portions. Raw veggies have so few

calories and so much bulk that it is hard to get enough calories that

way. I hope you figure it out for yourself - this sounds like no

fun. I would love to see the response on your docs faces when you

talk about the fattening water:)

I think I may have that book. I'll have to look. I have thousands of books!

(I have a serious addiction but at least it's a healthy one! lol) I love

spinach and portobello salads. I've been cooking the spinach with the

mushrooms and onions lately. I was at a restaurant about a month ago that

did up this dish for me so that's my latest addiction. So good! :) I need to

get back into smoothies though. I have at least 5 books that I know of off

the top of my head about smoothies and then at least 6 on raw foods! I don't

really take much in the way of supplements because with absorption issues

it's just a waste of time and money because I don't get any really benefit

from them. I do take folic acid and Vitamin C in the hope that it does help

some. I think they do. I take valarin which helps reduce my pain and helps

me sleep. I have hydrocodone for pain but I only take those when I really

need them because I hate taking drugs. At times though, I really don't have

a choice, I need the pills.

Oh the fattening water...would you believe one doctor (a GI of all people!)

said it's possible that the water could be an issue and I should consider

cutting back as it may help me loose some weight! I laughed so hard I

couldn't breath! Tears where running done my face! I of course fired him on

the spot and never went back! *Water has such a high fat content! I'm

certain it's the cause of our obesity crises! We get addicted to it as

babies and before you know it we're drinking 8-12 glasses a day or more!

Something must be done! LOL *

To think I was actually going to go to med school! Holistic health makes so

much more sense! In a way, I'm grateful for my illnesses! ;)
