Guest guest
Is spelt ok? Saw a cute little 'burger with bun' item in the store tonight- " vegan and wheat-free " But spelt is a 'hexaploid' species of wheat- so is it safe? thanks, DDP
Guest guest
From my own experience, I cannot eat spelt but others do okay with it. Not sure how you would find out without trying some and seeing if you have a reaction (not a pleasant test!) or having an allergy test, perhaps? ________________________________ " danieldale " <danieldale Wed, December 2, 2009 8:13:44 PM spelt?  Is spelt ok? Guest guest
Spelt is a form of wheat. It drives me crazy when manufacturers use spelt and then claim that it is wheat free. Spelt is not safe for celiacs. Shez On Dec 2, 2009, at 8:13 PM, danieldale wrote: > Is spelt ok? Guest guest
Question: Are spelt and spelt flour gluten-free?Answer: Spelt is a species of wheat, so spelt and spelt flour are NOT gluten-free. People who believe that spelt (scientifically known as Triticum spelta) is gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease are mistaken. According to the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004, foods that contain spelt or kamut cannot carry " wheat-free " or " wheat-alternative " labels. Source: Green PHR, Jones R. Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic. HarperCollins, NY, 2006, p. 199. it depends on your intolerance to wheat products whether you can use it or not. If a full blown celiac, you need to let it go. Guest guest
Thank you for the response below! Spelt is wheat, they share an almost identical genetic structure, so there is no way around it. I did a post on this on my website a couple of years ago, for more information can go here: http://www.elanaspantry.com/fda-spelt-is-wheat/ Since spelt has gluten it is not ok for those with celiac or gluten intolerance. , Sherene Silverberg <sherene wrote: > > Spelt is a form of wheat.
