I clean up as I go too, which makes the dish-doing easier on those whose

to keep bickering to a minimum.

And of course that isn't an option for those who live alone.

I like the cooking, and am not that messy. When my husband and I moved in

together, (in college), I tried to implement the rule " I cook, you clean " Well,

the cleaning up was getting put off until the next morning. Then sometimes

there were 2 dinners cooked and no cleaning.

Thank goodness his mother currently lives with us and does his chores for him!

Our daughter is 3 weeks away from turning 2, but I have a feeling he will be

more than willing to shell out for step stool so she can help.. He was so very

excited when she understood what the tv changer was and could bring it to him!

Our daughter, the pack mule! LOL

We tried that rule too at first but I'm a clean while I cook person

and he can destroy the kitchen making cold cereal so it didn't work

out well. Our schedules don't match right now so we each clean up

after ourselves and only have mutual cooking and cleaning up on our 2

overlapping days off which has variable results lol. Wish I could

train the cats to clean :)

Peace,

I see a lot of recipes here for stuff that basically mixes up cans, packages and

what not. I had a discussion with my husband about this last night and wanted

to ask here what others thought.

So do people here find that since there is so much vegan junk food out there

they basically throw together stuff to create a meal from a combination of

processed foods? Or, are there many here who actually cook from scratch? Whole

grains, soaked and cooked beans, etc?

Thanks in advance

I don't use processed foods except for Eden's organic beans and some canned

tomatoes and tomato paste.

If I manage to plan then I soak and cook beans.

I cook 3 meals a day from scratch. Perhaps I should say that every meal we eat

is made from scratch but I tend to make more than I need for one meal so that we

can eat left overs for other meals.

I make two huge pots of soup a week and my kids get soup and a plate of fruit

and veg for lunch most days.

The packages stuff I eat is mainly sunshine burgers and Amy's meals. I use

canned beans, but other than that, it's mostly all from scratch. I very

rarely make baked goods or bread. I'd really love to have all the fresh

healthy meals prepackaged and ready to go. It's so hard to find safe food.

Even with Amy's meals, there are not a whole lot that are safe. My junk food

is dried fruit and lara bars, and occasionally some safe chocolate. Most

processed foods contain at least one ingredient that is not safe. If it's

not wheat, milk or eggs then it's corn! When I eat pasta, I use deboles

multigrain gf pasta. I usually make my own sauce from scratch with lots of

veggies. The prepared foods that I buy are not what I consider processed!

All natural ingredients, whole grains, no additives, fillers or chemicals.

There's a difference between processed foods and prepared foods! You can buy

prepared foods that are healthy and not overly processed. Being vegan with

multiple food allergies, processed foods really are not an option! If I want

a candy bar, I either have to make it from scratch or settle for a lara bar.

Even when I make cookies or cakes they are much healthier than the average

cupcake! ;)

I do most from scratch, but do admit to using canned tomato sauce and

occasional canned beans or hummus (which come on at my Middle Eastern grocer

extremely cheap and save my blender wear and tear). And yes, I do use some

packaged greens/coleslaw, and frozen veggies. But I soak my beans and

pressure cook, make my our soup and stock, cook whole grains, grind my own

flours when I can, etc. My boys like cold cereal and rice cakes, but I

usually go with hot cereal, rice and veggies, etc.

I cook about 95% from scratch. I use whole gf grains (I have a grinder/flaker),

dried beans (I do the soaking and pre-cooking), fresh or frozen fruits and

veggies. I freeze a lot of our own veggies from our large summer garden; and

make apple sauce from our organic orchard. I even make my own salad dressing

but I use commerically prepared mustard in it.

However, when I make chilli, I use canned tomatoes. When we make Vietnamese

Salad Rolls, I open a can of black olives in addition to the rice noodles,

lettuce and other veggies. I buy bottled green olives and pickles for my

husband. I make our own zucchini relish from zucchini we grow but probably most

of our condiments are commerically prepared.

About the only time we eat actual meals of packaged foods is when we travel

(maybe once per month) and we make meals in hotel rooms. Cans and packets make

it a lot easier. When we were raising a child with very selective tastes, we

used whatever necessary to keep her eating as healthy as possible, otherwise she

was tended to go for the junk and fast food.

It is funny you bring this up - when I first went vegan, there really were not

many vegan junk foods so I cooked everything from scratch. If things are

hectic, then my processed foods are things like GF pasta, jarred tomatoes, and

Sunshine Burgers.

I guess veganism is a big enough demand market now that the food manufacturers

had to make something to get in on their market share. Seems the newest trend

is the GF market, as well as the Raw market...

Yea... and what bothers me the most about all the gluten free stuff is how much

crap is in it! There is sooooo much sugar in it too. Why? no reason. They

think they have to make it so to 'taste good'

just another way to make people unhealthy! GRRR

There's an old Buddhist saying: " When people stop trying to make their food

taste good, they find out that it already does. " :-)

At my house...there is a standing rule....if Mom doesn't cook it,

we don't eat it...and that means scratch. I have had a problem

with " so called health food advocates " who eat " healthy " junk food.

To me it is an oxymoron... Organic is better than non for sure...but

over processed re-constituted reconstructed food to me is still junk.

And my whole idea is to recover my kids and help our family...and I can't do

that stuffing that kinda thing down them. Besides I can better control their

diet...keep em free of their allergens..and that's hard sometimes even with some

of the better foods.

my 2 cents.

I try to do as much cooking from scratch also---the baking is very difficult for

me and depressing as I loved to bake before our food issues came to

light.....however, we are/were dealing with other health and neurological issues

as well so there hasn't been time to really figure out the baking dos and

don'ts.so I do take some help in that area with some prepackaged mixes.  It's

only really an issue around birthdays and other holiday celebrations.  Our idea

of a snack is a nut butter smothered on a granny smith apple or fresh veggies

with hummus...we never really had dessert that often anyway and now we look to a

lovely fresh fruit or fruit salad..whatever is in season.
