Guest guest
There is a thought that your intestinal flora have a lot to do with the development of celiac as an adult. If one can get everything (that is vitamins, minerals, beneficial microorganisms), then celiac may actually be cured. I personally believe this to be the case, but there must be a lot of advances in order for it to actually happen in the population as a whole. There is a whole generation of doctors who still think celiac is a 1 in 10000 disease and that diet does not affect health to the extent that it does and these guys are the ones teaching new students in some cases! That being said, I believe most people would beneifit from avoiding gluten during times of stress and during/after any illness or pregnancy - just a thought. Many, many advances have been made in the last ten years alone. I believe in correcting the underlying biochemistry! Guest guest
Medical schools are funded by pharmaceutical companies and therefore doctors are taught one pill, two pills, red pill, blue pill! Diet makes no money for the medical community! Unless of course the decide to cover our food under insurance! Now that is something I'm all for! It will be a win-win for all! The doctors will make money for prescribing us food, and we won't go bankrupt trying to feed ourselves and our family! My understanding of celiac, from all that I've read, is that although classified as an autoimmune disease, we are actually born with it. It's a genetic predisposition, although most of us didn't realize it or get diagnosed until adults. I had issues with food since birth and a recent comment my mother made led me to believe that she actually knew all along but chose to continue to feed me poison because she didn't think she could afford to feed me a special diet, even though she was getting wic and food stamps when I was an infant! As a baby and child I would lay in my bed for ours with my knees to my chest crying in so much pain I thought I was going to die! At times I wished I would die because the pain was so unbearable! I believe diet is the only cure! I don't care how many pills or research is done, I don't want to eat poison! I see gluten as poison! And a lot of things I've been reading recently is leaning towards the hypothesis that wheat and gluten containing foods are not really edible foods for humans! I've seen research links to cancers and all kinds of health problems! I don't think it's so much an autoimmune disease as it is our species being greedy and cheap and trying to make bulk food at ridiculously low cost with no regard for the lack of nutrition it provides. I just started reading the gene smart diet, which makes a lot of valid points, and some obviously argumentative statements (like you have to eat fish for omega 3s, which we all know is not so!) But in the beginning they talk about malnutrition in Africa. There are lots of grains available, yet these people are dying and diseased because of malnutrition! Malnutrition literally means bad nutrition! Are we so addicted to junk food that we need to spend billions of dollars researching and designing a pill so that we can eat the crap with minimal noticeable side effects? What is wrong with just eating real food? All that crap we are brainwashed into believing as normal food is killing us! Obesity, diabetes, asthma, anemia, osteoporosis, cancer, COPD, IBS, the list goes on and on! Why? Because we have to have that cake and pizza and double bacon cheeseburger! And people can't just enjoy crap as an occasional treat! Super size it, use a coupon so you get an extra one free, and eat 2 days worth of calories at one meal, all empty calories! Then wash it down with a diet coke, like somehow that diet coke makes it all ok because diet is in the name! It's disgusting and appalling how so many people think this is normal! We have such a wonderful opportunity! We are truly blessed with celiac disease because it gives us a kick in the but to revamp our views about food and really make profound shifts in our consciousness and our health! We shouldn't be looking for the get out of jail free card because we are not the ones imprisoned! Turn around and see that your on the outside of the bars and there is a world of opportunity before you! Don't fight celiac, embrace it it with reckless abandon! It's a gift, not a curse! Have a happy, healthy New Year! Guest guest
There are lots of grains available, yet these people are dying and diseased because of malnutrition! *** I listened to this Dr on tape once. He said he had examined thousands of bodies after death. He said most of them died from diseases of malnutrition. He said that was the cause of most health problems. Very intelligent man. He got in trouble for some of this teachings on nutrition because he was trying to help people. I think he is dead now, but the tape is very good. I have since read several people who say the same thing. maryruth Don't search for the truth in a church. Search for the truth in the Bible. Then find a church who teaches the truth. Guest guest
Jae, I feel you pain about having a mom who did not feed me the right things. My mom told me that as a kid they tested me for allergies and it came back I was allergic to everything. They never did anything so for years, I keep eating crap. I felt so bad for so long. My diet is still not perfect, but I'm working on it and I can feel the difference. I'm actually working on getting my kids and husband on a gluten free diet also. My middle son is not growing at all and it is really worrying me. Guest guest
Sorry you had to go through that. I'm glad your making positive changes, moving forward and feeling better. I hope the diet helps your middle son. Is he otherwise healthy? I know growth can be affected by gluten. When I was 3 years old I wore clothes my sister wore when she was 6 months old! I'm 5'9 " now, so there is hope! I don't know if there's a such thing as a perfect diet. All we can do is try to be more mindful about what we put in our bodies and make healthy choices most of the time. I made donuts last night, which is an occasional treat. It's ok to treat yourself once in a while. I'm talking about the people who consider a dozen donuts or a whole cake as a treat, and eat like that constantly! I ate 3 mini donuts, which are healthier than the average donut, and I started getting sick on the sugar! As a kid my died was probably 90% sugar, but after you detox, you really notice how bad it makes you feel and it's easier to make healthier choices. It's not the end of the world if you eat some junk food! I've know people who have tried to diet to loose weight and then they gave into a craving and ate 3 cookies after fighting the craving for a month. Then it's forget about the diet I'll be fat forever! We are only human and we have cravings and desires. I say when your really craving something, enjoy it, but don't over do it. If you fight the cravings for a long time, your more prone to overindulging when you do give in. Also, when your retraining yourself to shift your eating habits, very few people succeed cold turkey. It takes time to adjust to change. Sounds like your doing a great job and taking a proactive step towards good health. I wish you and your family the best of luck and health! Take care... We had my son to the doctor figuring he had a UTI or diabetes or something because he was peeing so much. Turned out, he had classic symptoms for fatty acid deficiency, and the doctors had no idea. Supplementing makes a huge difference to his skin, hair, nails, moods, and behaviour. Pam On Tue, Jan 5, 2010 at 9:11 AM, Karen Peeler <peelerk wrote: > > > James is basically healthy. Guest guest
This is maybe off-topic, but if he tends to get upset easily, can I recommend the book The Highly Sensitive Child? Reading The Highly Sensitive Person (that's me!) as an adult was life-changing, and I sure wish my mother had had the book about children when I was young. You can see more about it here: http://www.hsperson.com/pages/child.htm On Tue, Jan 5, 2010 at 11:26 AM, pdw <pdworkman wrote: > > > Is the rash on his face dry, like eczema? Guest guest
Have you started him on the gf vegan diet yet? Omega 3s are a good recommendation to try as well. If he continues to have the rash and emotional issues, I'd explore the possibility of other allergens/sensitivities. Yoga and meditation may help him find a sense of emotional balance and calm. I haven't read the book that Sally recommended but it sounds like a good book. I'll have to check it out. Good luck with your son. I hope you figure it out and he gets better. A lot of stuff like this is trail and error, but at least your trying to be a good mom and help him get better. I hope you find an answer!
