Apparently, not all alkaloids are created

equal. Perhaps the alkaloids found in onions

and garlic (the disulphides) will, upon further

study, reveal their antioxidant properties.

Tetrahydro--carboline Alkaloids Occur in Fruits and Fruit Juices. Activity as

Antioxidants and Radical Scavengers

http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/abstract.cgi/jafcau/2003/51/i24/abs/jf030324h.html

Tetrahydro--carbolines are biologically active alkaloids that occur and

accumulate in mammalian tissues, fluids, and brain, but their ultimate origin or

biological role is still uncertain. Four tetrahydro--carboline alkaloids:

1,2,3,4-tetrahydro--carboline-3-carboxylic acid,

1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro--carboline-3-carboxylic acid,

1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro--carboline, and

6-hydroxy-1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro--carboline, are found as naturally

occurring substances in some fruit and fruit juices. These compounds occur in

the g/g level in those products, and a characteristic and distinct profile

appears to exist depending on the type of fruit and juice involved. Thus,

1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro--carboline may appear in tomato, tomato juice, and

kiwi; 6-hydroxy-1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro--carboline in bananas, pineapple,

tomato, and their corresponding juices; and

1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro--carboline-3-carboxylic acid in oranges and

grapefruits, although it also

occurred in most juices. Fruit-occurring tetrahydro--carboline alkaloids acted

as antioxidants and free radical scavengers in the ABTS assay when compared with

ascorbic acid and Trolox. This suggests that tetrahydro--carboline alkaloids

might act as antioxidants when absorbed and accumulated in the body,

contributing to the antioxidant effect of fruit products containing these

compounds.

Tev, only sick people need to discuss antioxidants. Healthy people are ...

well ... healthy!!!

So once again, the whole discussion about using onions, garlic, and anything

else as a drug just vanishes.

Brother Elchanan, that is simply not true.

Healthy people discuss antioxidants too.

Many vitamins are antioxidants. Discussing

antioxidants is a perfectly healthy behavior.

Discussing the nutrional content of foods is

perfectly healthy too.

Health discussions should include:

*anti-aging/anti-aging factors/longevity

*how egotism ennervates oneself

and those around oneself (thieving life energy

and feeding it to the false self)

*psycho-cybernetics

As is comon knowledge, health is

created (and maintained). Also as common

knowledge, health is problematic. Discussion

of " what " is healthy is inevitable.

Hey Neal,

Where did you get this quote from, or did you make it up yourself? It

is quite good!

It isn't a quote, I always put quote marks around quotes and reference them.

It expresses a personal experience, an observable truth and it made me laugh.

Don't know where they come from.
