Euphemisms That Blind Us (WAS: Edible Mushrooms)

Hi Erin and all,

You can find lists of edible mushrooms, edible flowers, edible crayons,

edible glue products, and so forth. But what does this use of the word

" edible " mean?

It means that you will die or exhibit acute symptoms in response to eating

that item.

We also have the term " potable water " . In fact, every major city government

in the world provides (or arranges for private parties to provide) " potable "

water to all the inhabitants thereof. And if you drink the stuff, then I

have some swampland in Florida I'd just LOVE to sell you!!!

Terms such as " edible " and " potable " do not mean what we are led to believe

they mean, namely, that the item so labeled is genuinely safe to consume,

from the perspective of both short- and long-term health and vitality. And

such terms mean nothing at all WRT whether such items are biologically

well-designed food for our species.

No, these are just euphemisms, just as we " take " drugs instead of eating

them, or we " put a little meat on our bones " instead of becoming overfat,

and so forth. such words are right up there alongside " normal " , " happy cows "

(BIG ad campaign in California), and the like.

The important question is this: Are you willing to think clearly enough to

discern what is actually being communicated? Or do you prefer to stand

behind such euphemisms and blind yourself to what is really going on.

Best,

Elchanan

[Raw Food] Re: Edible Mushrooms

Anyone happen to know which of the mushrooms are safe to eat raw? I've heard

some are not and have even seen signs in the grocery to not eat shiitake

raw.

Thanks,

-Erin

Elchanan,

I agree with much of your post.

Edible and Potable do not mean necessarily quality or even desireable.

The only thing I don't agree with is:

" Or do you prefer to stand

behind such euphemisms and blind yourself to what is really going on. "

Because your post was about relativity (and was correct, imo) more than

actually saying anything proving mushrooms were an absolute non-food, etc. That

comments indicates that if people consider mushrooms a health food, they are

blind and have no idea what is going on. I'd say that's generally true of SAD

dieters or dairy, etc. But there are no mushrooom councils and mushroom

propaganda is not influencing us everywhere. This is kind of what people mean by

condescenscion and ego, btw. Your post was intelligent, eloquent, said nothing

to address your argument that eating mushrooms was damaging to the body for SURE

(because you will never go as far as to indicate it's not an absolute and that

it's instead your opinion on this gray issue) and then came in for the

condescending kill at the end. Nice prelude, no substance - totally evading what

is simply being questioned of you - and then an extremely heavy-handed,

absolutist conclusion.

Overall, I should be thanking you, though: by way of your example, I am

improving my own stand on these issues and tendency towards the extreme by leaps

and bounds. I actually sincerely mean that. Erica

As John Stossel would say, " Give me a break! "

Leaving aside your personal definitions of these common

English words, I didn't even use the word " edible, " but

to leave it in the subject. I asked which mushrooms are

" safe " to eat raw. So there! :P

You don't like the button or baby bella mushrooms raw? Mmmm...

I eat mushrooms daily, and when it's shiitake or some other more

exotic variety, I do cook them. They form the base for the warm

broth or tomato sauces that I pour over my raw veggies each night.
