Hi Bill,

Here is some brief conversation with Dr. Doug Graham and Laurie Masters

regarding your inquiry on those bananas. The short answer to your specific

question is " we don't really know " . Personally, I trust Dole's " organic "

certification about enough to buy bananas from any other competitor I can

find.

Where did you get that term " sugar spots " ? Doesn't make sense to me. Anyway,

hope some of these comments are helpful. Suggest reading from bottom, up.

[Raw Food] Dole bananas (green) with sugar spots?

All the big companies do this with their organic crops, to the degree that

they can get away with it. But it is on a very large scale, Laurie, and if

they didn't encircle their organic crops, then the neighbor's crops would

contaminate the organic crops with spray...

Tim told me how he remembered seeing Dole's plantation, where, if memory

serves, the " organic " patch of pineapple was INSIDE an outer circle of

non-organic pineapple, where it could receive all manner of chemical runoff

and et cetera. Sounded organic to the letter of the law only and not at all

so in spirit...

A: I have no reason to think of them as sugar spots. Where does this term

come from?

B: Bananas will ripen at different rates due to a variety of conditions,

including but not limited to:

The temperature at which they are shipped

The number of days on the vine before harvesting

The density and duration of ethylene exposure

Especially during each summer season you will notice that bananas seem to

ripen earlier in their color cycle than at other times of year, due to

exposure to heat.

Hi Doug,

Bill is a long-time associate here in the Bay Area, and I've noticed what he

has with the Dole " organic " bananas. Do you have an idea what may cause the

phenomenon he describes?

Thanks,

Elchanan

Dole bananas (green) with sugar spots?

Hello Elchanan,

I have been buying bananas for some time now and was glad to see " DOLE " get

involved with the organic side of things but what on gawds earth are they

doing to the " organic " bananas to enable green bananas start producing brown

sugar spots?
