Guest guest
Hello to all, My name is Racheal. I just recently joined the group due to my desires to begin a raw and living foods lifestyle. I am a mother of 5 children and wife seeking to change the health of my family. Although I am VERY financially restricted I feel that with time if I am given the basics of what I need to start my families journey to a better lifestyle I will be able to set goals and make accomplishments. My husband has said that one of the things about a raw and living foods diet and a natural hygeine lifestyle is its cost. I don't really know. I am pretty much in the frame of mind that what one wants and needs to accomplish can be accomplished by Gods will. Last night was my first raw food meal and I have to say it was exaclty what I expected. BORING, PLAIN and DRY (vegies, that is)! I've looked at the links in the group and a great deal of the files and pretty much am asking for advice on where to start. I came across a lot of recipes online from the links provided, but most of them are complex and right now speak of ingredients I have never even heard of. One I am very interested in trying is a broccoli and cranberry salad, however in the recipe it says use water and herbs for added flavor. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to add? I do hope I dont have unrealistic expectations, I would like to have a little flavor in the food, especially for the children! Also, can I steam the vegies for a minute or two or is that taking away from the nutitional value? At this time as far as food prep goes I have a blender for my use. What would you recommend as a couple other essential kitchen appliances and does anyone know where to find them at the best price? As I am sure many of you can tell I am in need of any advice you have to give. You can contact me by replying to this post or emailing me directly at pitter_patter123 Your time is very much appreciated. Many blessings. Take Care Racheal

BORING, PLAIN and DRY (vegies, that is)! Hi Rachel, Maybe this is because of what you have become accustomed to eating. It could also be the raw food was of poor quality. Most of what is in the supermarkets is pretty tasteless unless grown in good quality mineralised soil. Perhaps your expectations are a little unrealistic. Changing something so significant as diet takes time to get adjusted to. There is mental resistance to alleviate too. There is a huge selling machine behind the food industry and they know what they are doing otherwise they would not have been so successful. They sell their produce to people's minds first and follow that up with strong appealing flavours and horrible things like MSG. Think of changing diet more like giving up smoking or drinking or other addictive activity and sprinkle liberally with patience. neal. Guest guest
Welcome Rachael, You can steam anything you want but for a short time. I used a double boiler. Just go easy on yourself at first. There are all different levels of raw here in this group and others. I used many appliances - food dehydrator - madoline - food processor - but I wouldn't do without my Vita-Mix. That's about the only one I use much any more. I dehydrated everything and made many complicated recipes. I think what you family likes is a consideration - and just adapt some recipes you have with more raw ingriedients and do it gradually. You'll want to change more as you go along. Louise rawfood , " pitter_patter123 " <pitter_patter123 wrote: > > Hello to all, > > My name is Racheal. Guest guest
Hi Rachael! I empathize with your situation. It reminds me of myself back in the late 70s. To assist newcomers with this lifestyle, we have created a free, 4 part introductory teleconference series, which has free, downloadable MP3s available. The topics covered are: What is Health? Senses and Symptoms – Messages from Within Eat to Live! Nutritional Self-Awareness For initial books/materials to read (many free on the Internet), we send out recommendations as you become a participant in the group; and we have an extensive archive of posts answering many of the questions you ask. We are an exchange-based group, and no exchange is requested (other than some very brief information about who you are) until after you’ve been a participant in the group for 60 days. Guest guest
Hi Racheal, There are many types of raw diets. I never got much into complex recipes, so I can't help in that area. If you want anything in particular, there is probably someone who can help. As you're noticing, many veggies are not that appealing without a lot of added flavorings. You might want to try a simple approach based on lots of fruit. That's an easy way to get yummy calories, and children usually love it, from what I hear, anyway! You can experiment with smoothies, fruit puddings/soups, and you can even add fruit to salads to make them more interesting. As far as appliances, I personally only use a Vitamix (high-powered blender) and occasionally my Cuisinart food processor. I used a regular blender for the first year and it was fine, but then I got a Vitamix. It's better for frozen foods and more finely blends the lettuce I put in my smoothies. I use the Cuisinart for banana-mango pudding, applesauce, etc. It works better if you want to keep things a bit chunky. The cost is a bit tricky to evaluate, I think. You will learn how to shop better over time. If you eat raw, you won't be spending much money on restaurants. You won't need doctors and you will be healthy enough to enjoy life. Oh, and as to your question about steaming veggies--cooking does destroy nutrients, but cooking less destroys less, and I would say do whatever works for you! If you continue to improve your diet, you will get there eventually! Here are a couple blogs I love right now, in case you're interested: http://sarah811.blogspot.com/ http://bananaislandgetaway.blogspot.com/ Doug Graham's book, " The 80/10/10 Diet " has good, easy recipes in it, too. When you finish, you will have a more realistic idea of what you can do to help your family and how you want to live your life. Of course, it only works if you can do it for 21 days in a row. If you cheat on anyday, you have to start again counting from zero. But its easy, every day has the same rules. jrellis, rawtimes.com
Guest guest
Hello Racheal, One raw book with a part of slightly cooked foods that I still think is one of the best books out there for starters, written in the early 90s, with really good tasting raw recipes, " Dining in the Raw " from Rita Romano. The index is a little bit strange organized, but the recipes are easy, simple to follow and can be adjusted if one or the other ingredients is missing. Try it out, you will be surprised! And of course you can use Braggs, liquid aminos to make your food taste a little bit better. Braggs should not be seen as a salt replacement, mix half and half, half sea salt and 1/2 Braggs. It has a distinctive flavor that makes food a little bit more palatable. With the while when your taste buds change, you might need less and less. Since you have blender thats fine. If it is not a high speed blender, you might want to get the Health Master 100 from Jack La Lanne for only $148.00 plus warranty package. It is a super competition to Vitamix and cost only one third. Another very helpful equipment is a food processor, for example cuisinart. I love cuisinart because it is one of the only processors I can get a 1 mm thin slicer disc for it. Cost extra of course but really worthwhile to cut things extremely thin. For your family you need the 14 cup processor. Don't bother to buy a smaller one. And then a dehydrator, for example Excalibur, the 9 tray. It is available at www.fernsnutrition.com for I think $200.00 But at first you can do without it and sundry out in the garden or patio or balcony. If you have more question, please feel free to email at goodmoodfood or goodmoodfood.
