Guest guest
I am doing some experimentation and wanted to check in on theories that are out there. I know many people on this board are not supporters of eating dried fruit, nuts, or the combo of the two. Setting that aside, I wanted to check-in on the science behind these two scenarios: 1) Soaking nuts to remove enzyme inhibitors, then allowing nuts to dry for 8 hours in refrigerator. Then, combining with soaked dried fruits. 2)Soaking nuts to remove enzyme inhibitors, then allowing nuts to dry for 8 hours in refrigerator. Then, combining with unsoaked dried fruits. I had always soaked the dried fruits when eating with nuts, believing it would make them more digestible. I am now wondering if it makes it more of a juicy fruit, diluting the HCL and other enzymes necessary to break down the nuts. I have read books that say dried fruits and nuts are an okay combination, but juicy fruits and nuts are not. Any thoughts? Drake

" You have read a lot of literature which supports your concept. You have heard at least one self-proclaimed guru say that you cannot combine raw soaked nuts and raw soaked dried fruits. You are going to have to be brave here --- or a wimp. For answers to both your questions: 1- (unspoken) What is the raw food " guru " support for the idea of eating raw nuts and dried fruit? " and 2- Can I combine them? I would look at the teachings of Ann Wigmore. A good starter book would be " Recipes for Longer Life " . In this book, she shows food combinations (at the back of the book). Many raw pie recipes (in many raw food " gurus " recipes) involve combining raw soaked nuts and raw soaked fruit. If you are worried about conforming to the local guru's pronouncements, you should probably eschew nuts and dried foods, period. If you see that, in a raw food-combining chart, you can combine the two, I would do as you will. I would say that most of the " cook " book authors include, at the very least, pie crusts made with raw nuts and dried fruit. Many also combine raw nuts and dried fruit for cakes, breads, and desserts. Some even tell you, in their books, what their focus is, i.e. who they originally followed. I am a Wigmore-style person, so I do not have a problem with combining soaked nuts and, say, soaked organic dried raw dates. Since Ann Wigmore died in a fire (yeah, not because of her diet!) a while back, and her teachings have been altered by some high profile " gurus " using her organization's name, if you are afraid of, in awe of, or ready to kowtow to current gurus, you should probably not do what I do. You can learn more about Ann Wigmore's concepts at www.chidiet.com . As nearly as I can see, they follow Ann Wigmore's concepts fairly closely (a boon is that they offer distance training for those who cannot travel to them). Another teacher (alive as of this writing) who follows Wigmore concepts, and offers training is Brenda Cobb, of http://www.livingfoodsinstitute.com/ In New York City, but without a serious web presence, is Lillian Butler, of www..com , who offers a Wigmore-based training.
