Guest guest
Susan, biologically speaking, we are not designed to drink any form of milk after the age of weaning. Nor is any other mammal on Earth with which I am familiar. So ... would you consider water instead? Best, Elchanan _____ Susan monkeybiz [monkeybiz] Monday, October 15, 2007 8:23 AM rawfood [Raw Food] Re: Milk Substitutes (was Fasting while thin) Sorry I'm late jumping into this discussion. Joe and Neal were discussing soy vs. cocoanut milk. My question is this: Since I don't like either of them, what are the relative merits of various other milk substitutes such as almond, rice or oat milk etc.? Other nut milks, grain milks or bean milks being used out there? I am currently using almond milk, but with the new law saying raw almonds need to be pasteurized I'm looking for alternatives. Thanks, Susan
Guest guest
> almond, rice or oat milk etc There are ways to obtain raw almonds, I hear. Surely they will be for the rich only, though. ;-) I like sesame milk, too - but it's thicker and not strained when I make it. It's been a while, I admit. Lower fat works better for me, but it's raisins and sesame seeds and water blended. Very very high in calcium. You can use pumpkin or sunflower seeds and strain them like you are making almond milk. Or, you can use cashews, hazelnuts, or whatever nut you want. It is expensive, fattening (especially the nuts), and should be the exception and not the rule. Furthermore, the sunflower and possibly the pumpkin milks, doesn't taste so hot. If you are seeking these out for the occasional nog, or treat, then go with the cashew, mac or other nuts, maybe. I have heard of blending zuccini with water and straining it. I have heard this is really tasty. I would maybe try that! But water is best. :-) erica
Guest guest
Yes, I understand that and I drink alot of water and eat alot of juicy fruits, but hubby still insists on cereal for breakfast with " milk " . Guest guest
Thank you Erica for your " milk " suggestions. I particularly appreciate the relative merits given -- taste, fat & nutrient content, etc. Susan
