Re: [Raw Food] Green Juice v Green Smoothies

Carla Rose For several months, I had been drinking green smoothies

almost daily. I had stopped because it seems like it was needlessly

increasing my hunger and cravings for horrible foods I had not had in years!

My smoothies was always strong with just one serving of fruit or a hand full

of berries. W/o the smoothies, I feel more in control of my hunger and

cravings---not that I ever gave in to them, but at least I'm not feeling

miserable.

It could be that you're not having enough fruit with your meal - blood sugar

levels seem to trigger hunger/satiation. I found (a few years back, post

baby), on the few occasions that I was really hungry, that I could eat until

the cows come home, and then eat the cows, and still be ravenous, but if I

had a teaspoon of honey, it stopped hunger in its tracks. A salad would

never " fill me " , though if I ate enough I'd end up feeling full and bloated,

but if I eat fruit before the salad, then it feels like a meal. It has to

be -enough- fruit though - based on 2-3000 calories a day, each meal should

be _at least_ 600 calories, which is around 6 bananas, for example. Then

the salad, which is about 2 calories per ton of lettuce (yes, I am

exaggerah).

The other thing I was wondering, is how you're feeling the hunger? Is it

pains/groaning in the belly? This can be other things going on (eg

something not sitting right). Hunger can also be a mistaken message of

thirst - maybe you're not getting enough water with your smoothie. There is

something to be said for eating the foods, rather than blending them too. I

feel much better after eating bananas than after drinking them.

Hi Caron,

I cannot eat that much fruit w/o feeling tired and shaky. I have the

tendency towards insulin resistance and have to be careful with how much

fruit I eat in a day. In a smoothie, I usually blend it with one fruit: a

whole apple, pear or a handful or berries. I cant eat bananas at all. Even

a small amount (1/2 ripe organic banana) makes me super constipated. I cant

eat super sweet fruit like grapes or I will feel nauseous from the sugar,

even a very small amount. Other fruit doesn't do that, just grapes and

bananas.

The hunger is pains, growling in the belly. I drink close to a gallon of

water a day so its unlikely I'm thirsty. Even so, I may drink a glass of

water when hungry and it just makes my hunger worse after 5-10 minutes. Like

its flushing everything out of my belly.

I have insulin resistance too, have had for years, the last few years

bordering on full blown diabeties. I feel tired and shaky when I eat my

sugar with fat - eg fruit and nuts, or anything cooked (except meat, which

doesn't have much sugar). When I eat only fruit, I feel fine. If I eat only

nuts, I feel fine, sugar-wise (though a bit heavy in the belly later). I do

feel hungry very shortly after eating nuts though. I also get shaky if I

haven't had enough fruit in a meal - if I eat 5 grapes (the usual offering

from my boy) I need to follow it up with a decent amount of fruit, otherwise

I'll " crash " not long after.

On a good day, I'll start with half a dozen bananas, or a bowl of papaya or

similar, and have similar meals throughout the day (eg 3-6 apples for lunch,

3 or 4 oranges for dinner). I can't make a full meal of, for example,

berries, or grapes, but they're good for a snack, or when I feel like a

different taste. I don't eat nearly enough lettuce, though I've noticed my

son will ask for lettuce then make me eat it - maybe he knows when my milk's

getting short of those nutrients?

My son (3yo), who's also shown signs of blood sugar issues, does best when

he sits with a plate of fruit and eats it all, rather than his preferred

method of 1 piece of fruit every 20 minutes throughout the day. He's eating

the same quantity, but giving his body the chance to process it all at once.

If he's eating one type of fruit (eg apples), he can eat 3 full apples, cut

up, over a period of about half an hour, depending on how many other things

he brings to do at the same time. However, if he swaps around and gets a

handful of grapes here, then half a date there, then a bite of apple, at

some point, usually after the equivalent of one whole piece of fruit, he'll

grab his belly and groan " my tummy FULL! " , which I've taken to mean he feels

SICK, as he also says it in the car if we're doing corners, even when food

isn't a factor.

As far as bananas and constipation, I've never noticed this, so again, maybe

it's a question of quantity? My son ate only bananas for months, and has

never been constipated on them.

>The hunger is pains, growling in the belly. I drink close to a gallon of

water a day so its unlikely I'm thirsty. Even so, I may drink a glass of

water when hungry and it just makes my hunger worse after 5-10 minutes. Like

Yep, I've had that feeling too - more frequently lately, when I've been

eating some bad foods. I've noticed a few things about those belly pains -

first, if I do nothing, they tend to fade after 5-10 minutes, sometimes a

bit longer (ie, if I've had a drink and the pains come back in a few

minutes); second, if I get active, they also fade, though the timeframe is

similar, so perhaps the action has nothing to do with it, hehe. If I'm

feeling those pains, or just feeling like eating in general, I have a look

at how my body's feeling to see if I'm really needing food or not - over the

years I've noticed how my limbs, in particular, feel when I'm needing to

eat. I pick the limbs (upper limbs are best, as extremities can get a bit

fuzzy for other reasons) because my belly pains don't tend to indicate

hunger very accurately, and my head often hurts for reasons unrelated to

food intake. My limbs seem to tell the true story. It's also been suggested

that hunger is felt in the mouth, but I haven't come to recognise that

signal yet.

As far as calories go, 2000-3000 is recommended for the average adult (more

for an active lifestyle). Nutridiary will tell you how many calories per

piece of fruit, and you can change the serving size to get the number of

calories for your meal. It will also tell you the ratio of carbohydrates

(sugar) to protein to fat, along with some vitamins and minerals. I just

check the pie chart, and the number of calories, and try to make sure the

pie is mostly carbs, and the calories are around 600-900 for the meal. I

don't check it daily, just check it to see how many pieces of a particular

fruit I need to make a meal (6 bananas, or 6 dates, or 3-4 apples, or, etc),

if I come across a new fruit, or if I forget, as is often the case! The

reason I started checking calories is that, even as a SAD eater, I rarely

had enough calories - I'd eat the daily recommendation of 2000cal over a

period of a week, rather than a day.

Caron,

As far as bananas, I have very poor digestion by nature anyway--so I have to

be careful what I eat. I doubt most or even some people have that type of

problem with them.

Along with my hunger pains, I am VERY moody, depressed, dizzy and if I go

for a longer period of time w/o food, I have the tendency towards

headaches. I'm too weak to be active at that point. I'm not sure what " true

hunger " feels like because I've never gone days w/o food so I cant speak on

that feeling.

On any given day, I problem dont eat enough. I know I did today, but there

are days when I eat far less. I'm also active with HIIT and weight training

so I do some activity of the sort daily along with day-to-day activities. I

am a very solid/muscular 5'6 " 150 lb person (36-26-38) and do probably need

a little more than 2000 cal/day---especially with the HIIT which is a very

heart pounding workout.

Fair enough. My boy had some huge digestion problems when he was eating

cooked foods, to the point where even fruits weren't digested properly. They

didn't resolve until he got all his teeth (I assume you're past that point

;o) ), and until we got the hang of proper food combining (or eating one

food at a time, as was more to the point), making sure he had his avocado as

his last meal of the day if he had one, cut out nuts and dried foods, and so

on. Maybe some of that might help you too?

I get this too, even though I -know- I could go without food, it's too

unpleasant, so I eat to make it go away. Another thing that helps is a cup

of water, and a good sleep. Otherwise, juicy fruits can help if I really

need to keep going.

Sounds like you'd need more then - check out nutridiary, it might be able to

show you where you can increase your intake.

It really depends. On the days I eat (or try to eat fruit alone due to

simplicity and time) its usually the first thing I've had for the day. Later

I would add fats such as coconut, avocado, and feel better. I may have less

or no fruit later in the day. Regardless of what else I've had, grapes and

bananas always make me feel ill in small amounts.
