Guest guest
I saw the dates again today in the store and declined again. They said Medjool, which I'd never heard of. Still, the very thought. I saw avocados this week. There were green ones, blackish ones, and green-and-blackish ones. Which ones does one buy? Guest guest
I believe the blacker the avocado, the riper the avocado. Dee in PA
Guest guest
If you're in Florida they're large and green. I don't like them much. even though I live in Florida I but the Hass Avocado. They're green and hard when unripe. And black skinned when ripe. I buy them when they're in between and leave them in the fruit bowl for 2 or 3 days There were green ones, blackish ones, and green-and-blackish ones. Guest guest
Alex, Medjool is widely considered one of the premier varieties. What you see in the store probably looks, feels, and tastes all dried out. Those were once dates, but are no more! The best source is a grower. Happy to provide info if anyone is interested. Do you know a grower in Australia? ;oP I've been trying to sprout seeds from the dates we've been munching, but not sure if they want to grow for me. My thumbs are far from green. Guest guest
I too was introduced to dates earlier this year. Here is where I blog about the large order I placed: http://www.zenpawn.com/vegblog/2007/04/11/dates/ with pics included. Yummy! The medjools, big and juicy, were indeed my favorite and are all gone. I still have some of the other varieties in the freezer. Guess I'm ready for our New England winter. -Erin http://www.vegandonelight.com - Elchanan rawfood Wednesday, October 31, 2007 5:49 PM RE: [Raw Food] dates and avocado, was Newbie! Guest guest
I can relate to your aversion of dates by looks. I too walked on by several times before buying a small package. I still wouldn't eat one like a caramel like some suggest, BUT I have found if I soak them, blend them with a bit of soak water and add some vanilla extract the flavor IS reminisent of caramel sauce that I have used in various raw vegan " treats " . Avocadoes are ripe when you are able to gently push on them and the skin goes in. Too mushy and it'll taste yuck, too hard and it'll taste yuck. You can buy them unripe and store out of the fridge till ripe, then eat or store in the fridge til ready to use within a few days. I made a chocolate pudding today with avocadoes that tastes just like the cooked milk based out of the box kind I remember as a kid.
