Guest guest
[this did not go through yesterday, so I am re-sending it] My thoughts.. I don't know how much good the online " petitions " actually do. I have not participated in those, especially if any of the services require signing up for the service. I am sure that a physical petition received via certified mail (return signature required) will have much more impact, especially from a consumer group or Non-Profit Organization (oooooh, saaaay... The Raw Network of Washington?). Is that something the board of directors would authorize? Is there some one (or many) from this email list that would be willing to collect signatures? Copies of the petitions could also be sent to other agencies, as well as our congresspersons and the California Governor (if he recognizes 100% pasteurization means consumers choosing other states' almonds over CA's, they may make an exception/new category). Keep in mind this is just for California almonds. For now, we can still find, hopefully, truly raw almonds from other states, though they may follow suit if they see an economic benefit. Only " two " incidents of salmonella have occurred, yet they are implementing this process on all raw almonds (with exceptions of " DV " category). Raw foodists (probably consuming a far higher amount of raw almonds than the rest of the population) seem to experience far less health problems, including colds, flues, and " food poisoning " , so 100% pasteurization is unacceptable. Eliminating truly raw sources of almonds may actually increase the amount of disease symptoms (at least among raw foodists.) There are actual loopholes for California growers to ship " unpasteurized " almonds, but nothing that appear to benefit raw almond consumers. Perhaps, with enough pressure, they will allow a category of consumers to receive raw almonds, provided they are clearly marked as " unpasteurized " . One angle that many raw foodists can take is religious freedom. The Essene teachings tell us we should not cook our food. Pasteurization is a form of cooking and may denature the food. That, to me, interferes with our religious freedoms and right to healthful food sources. The almond board says: " This action will help ensure that quality almonds are available for human consumption. " That is an opinion. Many of us recognize the quality diminishes with pasteurization and various forms of " cooking " . " with no significant degradation of the sensory and quality characteristics of almonds, such as the flavor, color, texture, or skin integrity. " But will the almonds actually grow once they are soaked or planted? For raw foodists, these are requirements for " quality " . If an almond will not sprout/grow, then it has definitely experienced " significant degradation " . " How is the quality of pasteurized almonds being evaluated? " " A professional sensory panel is evaluating almonds before and after treatment to ensure taste and texture is within the range of normal crop variation. In addition, analysis is being performed to confirm no change in shelf life or nutritional benefits. " What about " nutrients " not tested for, such as enzymes or nutrients not yet discovered?
