Guest guest
I can't believe this is bugging me, I actually was getting mad about it when I was up in the middle of the night. My Mother in Law, who is always a challenge anyway, hs taken to calling herself a vegan. She doesn't say she eats vegan, she says I am "vegan".She's not! She wears leather and basically just doesn't eat cheese, meat, or I guess eggs either, but she isn't even that careful about whether things have chicken broth in them, she'll use any product that has animal ingredients, honey, wears, wool, silk, she eats soy cheese that was casein in it. She had to cut out meat and cheese for a health problem she was having, yet I have a feeling she falls off the cheese wagon here and there. The thing with being vegan is that unlike just being vegetarian which people are for different reasons, veganism tends to encompass a philosophy more than just a diet. When I hear someone is vegan that tells me alot about them right off the bat, and for some reason it bugs me when she goes around calling herself a vegan. Petty? Yes, probably. I have tried to talk to her about it before, just subtlely bring it up like I was talking about myself, "Because I am vegan I don't wear animal products or soaps with milk, ect, it's hard for people to grasp that vegans do not eat honey, wear silk, wear wool, ect" but she keeps calling herself a vegan.I guess I just need to mellow out, but I think I am going to write a Christmas wish list, we do it just so family knows the kids sizes in things, ect. and on that write that because I am vegan, vegans can't wear this or do this, and maybe get it through her thick skull. And then maybe buy her a book on veganism and say "Because you are interested here's a good book". Thanks for listening. Guest guest
Hi I can understand you being 'niggled' by this. I think your idea about a Christmas wish list is good - and may help. If you could put on it somewhere that it is very important that items do not contain ..... this might make the point even more. Good luck Jo - Surya Burdick Thursday, October 23, 2003 6:44 PM I am being petty I can't believe this is bugging me, I actually was getting mad about it when I was up in the middle of the night. Guest guest
I have a story a bit like yours. It is something that has really been nagging at me. I work as a server in a restaurant that serves.... basicly nothing that I can eat. (I hate it so much). Anyhow a couple of months ago I was informed by one of my managers that another Vegan girl just got hired, so I would'nt be alone anymore. I was so excited until he said. " But what I thought was cool, is that she still tested out all of our side dishes, saying that she knows it's part of her job to try everything and she dosent have a problem doing it. " I then said Well, she is Not a Vegan then. All of our sides have tons of dairy and a couple even have bacon. He thought I was just being snotty. Then as the days went by, I witnesed her " trying " the seafood special that the chef puts up for the servers to test out. And whyle we are eatting our server lunch before the restaurant opens(I always bring my own), she ALWAYS has some of the left over desert. All of our deserts have egg or dairy or both. When someone sais something about her being Vegan, I politely tell them that she is not a Vegan. She's not even Vegitarian. One person told me that She took a bite of someone elses burger. And said that she is Vegan, but that it dosent stop her from eatting what she wants. ?????????????????? I keep thinking that I should tell her that I think it's great that she is LEANING towards a plant based diet, and if there is anything I can do to help, to let me know. I usually just stay away from her. She's anoying even besides that. I only have a month left at that restaurant and I am moving to San Fran. No more flesh houses for me. Guest guest
What is the problem with being more direct and to the point? Get it all out into the open. Sometimes people have a very hard time picking up " subtle " hints. For god's sake just tell her! She just may appreciate your forthrightness and honesty. AND, you may even find she enjoys learning something new. Besides... that is an awful long time (between now and Christmas) to be carrying the energy of resentment (resentment about her not understanding the philosophy of veganism) around in your body/energy field. (That is unless you have other issues that keep you from being honest with her openly... if that's the case, it looks like you may have your homework/innerwork cut out for you... and that's okay too!) Guest guest
A freegan would only test the side dishes which were left over, not taste all of them (presumably fresh from the kitchen).
