Jill, interesting, thanks!

I feel the same way actually, I often think I would be Christian if it wasn't for all the Christians. I actually follow Christ's teachings, he is definetely a teacher for me and I do want to follow his example.

But for the most part the whole Christian organization eludes and confuses me, apart from a couple of crazy Christians I have met who seem to be out there at homeless shelters and soup kitchens and holding the hands of the dying, and going to the ghettos, and other similar things only someone as crazy as Christ would do.

I call myself a "Christ centered" Unitarian, and attend a Unitarian church. It makes some Christians mad, and they tell me I can't follow part of Christ's teachings and have it all wrong, hellfire. ect.

Oh well. Life goes on.

I do work with an interfaith organization and have met some nice Christians there, so I am learning that not all of them wish hellfire upon me, lol!

But as for Christ, I think like someone said he is an amazing prophet and teacher. If we could all model his love and compassion, and take his message to the streets in an active way, it would be like a giant revolution!

There is a great book by a man called John Dear, a Jesuit Priest, called "Jesus the Rebel". It is really radical and he is a really radical Christian, calling us to turn our swords into plowshares, to love our enemies, basically everything that Jesus preaches, only he is saying "Do it! Go be little Jesuses! Go stand in front of the bombers and protest, go to the war zones and stop the wars! Go to the soup kitchens! Go to the hospitals! Go to your enemy and give them a hug!" He's really cool. No matter how far you have gone on the wrong road, turn back. -Turkish proverbFact: Each gallon of gas used by a car contributes almost 20 pounds of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. A single car driving 1,000 miles a month adds up to 120 tons of CO2 annually. Fact: One crop of hemp grown on one acre of land produces the same amount of pulpable fiber as one acre of 20 year old trees.

Christians believe it is right to eat animals, I've noticed this

from the Christians I know. I think it is more important to show

compassion in your life for God's fellow creatures than sitting in

church every Sunday morning. Being a vegan is doing something

positive on a daily basis for life and it isn't just something

reserved for a hour long sing-song on a Sunday morning.

I think generalisations are unwise. There are Christian vegans and Christian everything else, just the same as any other group. You cannot really tar one whole group with the same brush. I'm a Pagan but some of my best friends are Christian.

I humbly take back what I said then. Good point Jo. I'll rephrase

what I said to refer solely to the Christians I know who are big

meat eaters and quote that it says in the Bible you should eat

meat.

I didn't say I wasn't a Christian but I apologise if I made a

sweeping generalisation. Janey x

I do think there's been a strong thread in Christianity which opposes

animal rights. Back in Genesis, the animals were put on earth to serve

the interests of man, generally by dying and being eaten.

Although I don't remember the theology, I do know that large numbers of

seventh day adventists are vegan. I only know this because they run some

good restaurants, and taught a friend of a then girlfriend how to cook a

really nice vegan thanksgiving.

And there are always people who decide on their own behalf not to eat

meat, whether Christian, Muslim, or whatever.

Is there a thread of Christian theology which is pro-vegan, outside of

the seventh day adventists?

Thats because the SDA'ists I've met actually read what it says in the

beginning of Genesis, which says clearly what we and animals should eat.

I'm sure It doesn't mean that we ' ought ' to eat meat, as it could be interperted to mean.... by using the word 'should'...As that would totally go against the original story plan.

You know you get that feeling when you wish you hadn't got involved

in a discussion - well, I've got that feeling now. I don't wish my

comments to be discussed upon further. Religions, politics etc - I

should know better than to get involved in subjects like these which

no one ever agrees on! Janey

Hi.. I agree if there is no change for the better from a discussion..then

whats the point of discussing?

Having said that..if someone has a point to make which they think is of

help..then it has to be said whether a person likes it or not...(

respectfully)

I'm sure every vegan here agrees that animals shouldn't be harmed and eaten.

And that as least harm should be done to every creature on earth ( or on any

other planet..come to that)...

... As hard as it may be..Religion and Politics has to be discussed (at

sometime anway) if things are going to change.....as well as respecting

those who don't want to discuss them ... .of course.
