Hi,

I understand that the owner of Sainsbury's has financial interests in animal

testing.

It is good to try to get the supermarkets to tell you about their vegan lists. I

have recently been in touch with Lidl to see if they have one. They have

written back to me to say they are dealing with my enquiry! Will let you know if

they send me a list. I did contact Superdrug a while back too by email and

they said they are no longer doing a list.

I had a real shock at my local Tesco the last time I shopped there. They had moved all of their vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free foods RIGHT next to where they were cooking whole chickens ready-to-eat. It would be bad enough for vegan food to be displayed next to packaged meat, but when I was trying to choose some Provamel desserts, the smell of cooking flesh and the sight of those little bodies being spun around spits was so overwhelming and gut wrenching that I had to walk away! I went to my local Tesco again tonight and the vegan products are still there, so I went to the Customer Services desk and made a complaint. I was asked to fill in a form which I did and I explained that the smell of meat was so overwhelming that I couldn't stand by the vegan counter long enough to choose which products to purchase. The member of staff I spoke to told me I was making a valid point. I am awaiting a response as I left my details.

Oh good for you, Janey. I quite sympathize with your problem - the sight

and smell of cooking birds is just a bit too anatomical for most

vegetarians, I would think. Hope you are successful in getting the vegan

products moved to a non-meat site. In our local supermarket, they keep

the tofu, fake meats, fake cheese, etc. (not much of it, admittedly) in

a small corner next to the start of the fresh produce - it took ages to

notice it was there, but once I did . . . ;=)

Best,

Pat/Canada

Hi,

Yes, Lord Sainsbury seems to be an unpleasant chap by all accounts. I

wonder, though, if the good that comes of buying vegan products in his

stores and so encouraging more vegan products to be easily available, so

that one day it will be as accessible as being vegetarian and no longer seen

as odd, outweighs the bad of putting a little more money in his pocket.

Also, whilst his prediliction for animal testing might be bad, 'his' current

prediliction for promoting vegan products on the shelves is good, so why not

encourage that side by shopping there?

Well, all right, yes I know the 'why not's, I just think they might be

outweighed by the 'why's.

I shop in supermarkets like Sainsbury's and Tesco in the hope that if the demand is there for vegan products, more will be stocked. My local Sainsbury's sell a wonderful selection of vegan products and if people like me didn't buy them, they wouldn't bother selling them. I see the arguments on both sides, but I do feel that if meat eaters see the odd vegan product, they might be tempted to try it. Ripples in the pond, and all that ......!
