Yuck!

Following on from the *yuck* situation with my soya milk at work last week, I had some Yofu yogurt pots on my desk this evening and a solicitor saw them just as I was packing my stuff up to go home. He bent over sideways and jokingly made out that he was vomiting on the carpet. I told him that I didn't know why the look of the yogurts made him feel sick, because at least there weren't any dead animals in them! Ha! He didn't have an answer for that one! But my colleague piped up that I didn't know how the soya beans had been grown, and then they came up with lots of suggestions like cow manure etc! LOL!

A colleague of mine regularly "yucks" my food, including falafel. How could anyone "yuck" falafel - food of the goDs surely...

And then she leaves her lunch dishes in the (communal) sink with bits of animal attached...

Cheers

Its so annoying though! The guy at work yesterday was pretending he was vomiting just by looking at the yogurt pots. They weren't even open so he didn't even know what they looked like inside. He saw that they were *100% non dairy* and then started gagging!!!!!!

Hi Janey

Do you respond when these jerks make these remarks? Chances are they

are just into winding you up if they get a reaction. Try not

responding at all, try a withering/disdainful look and just go on

talking about something totally unrelated, failing that a " why don't

you mind your own fucking business " might do the trick :)

Hi Graham

Actually this guy is the spitting image of Phil Collins. His face, hair

everything! He gets totally and utterly pissed off by people telling him

so. Even when he was on holiday in France last year, one of the hotel

receptionists said *do you know you look like Phil Collins* and he went

insane because he hears it all the time, even when he is walking in the

street! So, I looked at him very naively yesterday and said, *wow, you look

just like Phil Collins*. You could say that did the trick!!!!!!! It was

5pm too, so I managed to make a hasty exit!!! LOL! You have to play them

at their own game, I've decided!

Maybe it's to do with being in care work, but I've never had these

sort of problems at work, in our staff room everybody gets along fine

at lunch time. There is one person who used to make snide remarks

about my vegan diet, but as she is clearly ignorant and a mass of

insecurities anyway I'm not too bothered. She doesn't bother anymore

anyway, although did start talking loudly about how lovely Mcdonalds

food is when she saw I was reading john Vidals 'McLibel' book in the

staff room a couple of months back. i just pretendied not to have

heard and carried on reading, and she quickly gave up, esp as nobody

else in the room bothered to pick up her lead.

The Omnivores on the whole where I work are considerate to the

veggies (i think there are about 4 veggies on the staff team,

including me, out of a core staff group of around 20 or so), when our

Xmas meal was booked (in Feb!!) the woman organising made sure

veggies would be catered for. Another person who has now retired, and

is a profesional caterer as a sideline, often has parties and makes

sure there is a seperate table of clearly vegan friendly dishes.

At one point where I used to work about 10 years ago there were 3

VEGANS out of a staff team of 15, which must be a pretty amazing

ratio!!!

When I first became vegan in 1984 I worked in a government office

with typical 'office worker' types and didn't get any grief there

either, but as i was a bit of a full on evangelising vegan punk

rocker type perhaps nobody dared!! I even got some of the staff to

sponsor a football match put on by the local punky types in aid of

ALF prisoners!!!

Cheers Graham

Yes, I think that's a novelty Graham. :)

The guys at work just do it to be annoying. There's no malice there. Its

just a joke. Just like they call me *Floaty Jane*. If there was true

malice behind it, then I would tell them to F*** Off! But its just an

annoying joke. If someone offers me any food now at work I just say, no

thanks, I don't fancy eating any dead animals today - but thanks for

offering. :) LOL!

I would just totally ignore the silly remarks. They are probably just

trying to attract your attention. Once they realise it doesn't they might

stop. (Behaviour modification).

Hi Viv and Janey, Gawd, if anybody 'yucked' at my food, I'd give them hell - they'd have a hell of a lot of explaining and justifying, to do about their own choice of food - maybe they are all just scared of me, which is why nobody ever comments!!! (yeah, I'm so scary - all 5 foot 4 of me - and obviously puny and underfed because I dont eat properly!). It amazes me why obviously educated people, like your solicitor can act so childishly - you should question his ability as a solicitor - I mean, he presumably only sees one side of a situation, which surely is disastrous in the legal world (well in any world) - I certainly wouldn't want him to defend me, if ever needed. Y'know that would infuriate me so much, I just would have to 'yuck' at that guy every time I saw him - blah - its a shame ye have to put up with that ....

take care, Joeann

ps. pardon my ignorance but what is LOL short for?

Mmmmm...falafel...

These are often the same people who will have something that does not

contain animal products (bread, bagel) and think it's delicious. But tell

them it's a vegan bagel and all of a sudden " yuck. " It's ridiculous!

When I came to uni most of my freinds 'yucked' my food, so I invited them round for a meal before going out one night. Apparently it wasn;]'t until they were on the way round that they remembered I was vegan so they had to eat my food. I cooked them a vegan cottage pie and they were well impressed and now will willingly eat my food!

Exactly, when I was being bullied in nurse training, I heard that one of my colleagues was talking behind my back and saying that she was uncomfortable with me because I made her feel guilty eating her ham sandwiches. But I had never said anything to her while she was eating, although she knew why I was a vegan. If she felt guilty, I woudl say it was a wake-up call to change her habits, and she should not have blamed me for it. I didn't have the power to make her feel guilty, she obviously did know that eating animals was wrong. Blaming a vegan colleague for animal eaters guilt feelings is called shooting the messenger, but this is what is probably behing vegans getting picked on most times.

She doesn't bother anymore anyway, although did start talking loudly about how lovely Mcdonalds food is when she saw I was reading john Vidals 'McLibel' book in the staff room a couple of months back. i just pretendied not to have heard and carried on reading, and she quickly gave up, esp as nobody else in the room bothered to pick up her lead. >>To send an email to -

Looks like you definitely touched on her guilty conscience Lesley. Ha! :)

If you were sat there eating ham sandwiches as well, she would still have known she was eating a dead animal but it wouldn't have bothered her because you were too!
