Guest guest
Hi Everyone I haven't experienced this in a long time... but I just had "the conversation" about food animals with a NY friend I've been IM'ing with for a long time. I don't bring up these issues...only when they come up. It started with her leather jacket and I said something about it related to animal cruelty and we went from there. What was amazing about this conversation was the denial. I can handle and accept it when others simply state that it is not a priority for them. But when they do not accept the facts, that's when I feel I must speak up. Some of the things she said "there are laws protecting them (chickens)", "it doesn't happen everywhere [factory farms]", "I don't believe everything I see or hear [animal rights videos and photos]", "I care just as much as you do [even though she loves her meat]", "I am not sure there is any cruelty at all", etc etc. Can you imagine how frustrating? Point by point I tried to make...but it's so hard when there is this thing called DENIAL! What was also interesting to listen to is how she was dissecting the morality of her own life. She is a corporate lawyer in NYC...and she admitted she "pays a lower amount of taxes than other who make a whole lot less" and that "she works for people who probably should not be defended". I didn't 'even ask for this info! She volunteeered it all! Anyways, I just wanted to share with those who might understand. I forgot how hard it is to have these conversations especially since I feel so sensitive about it. But, all in all, I think it went well. I hope! I hope she will be talking to me again. Cheers Kristina

Guest guest
Hi Kristina I suppose it is easier to live in denial than give up something - that would require some effort and acknowledgement. Jo

Guest guest
i know how it is, i'm talking to some weirdo right now who thinks that our appendix is small cuz we are supposed to eat meat when in reality (which i read online today so might not be 100% correct) the appendix was originally much larger because only herbivores even HAVE appendixes, and since a long time ago we were tryin to change to a carnivore diet, that is why it got smaller. and it even said that appendicis was less likely in those who ate lots of fruits and veggies (high fiber diet, fiber not found in meat) arr!! i hate arguing w/ these morons cuz it really stresses me out. i can't stand how some ppl's minds work. and it isn't just the ppl who eat animals who bother me when they try to argue w/ me. there are other weirdos out there too like the ones who kill ppl as well and steal. what goes through ppl's heads? see...this is why i like animals more than ppl. and then he was like...well you are still killing animals cuz the factory that makes your soy ice cream had to kill animals to make their factory cuz it ruined their habitat. and then i was like " well are you saying just cuz some animal deaths are unavoidable, we should purposely go out and kill as many as we can? " and then he gets mad cuz he thinks i can't come up w/ my own defense lines. i told him that i know even as a vegan i contribute to animal deaths accidently ( i have never hit an animal w/ my car but i'm sure i may have swished some ants w/o knowing it) and i also contribute to pollution by driving my car and even contributing to the polluting trucks that ship my fruit and veggies to the store, but i do the best that i can to impact the damage to this world as little as possible and if i ever have the money, i would love to have a greenhouse on my roof and grow everything organically myself and that would reduce pollution even more. anyway, it feels better to let my anger out w/ ppl who understand me, instead of talkin to ppl brainwashed by the meat and diary industry btw, my mom is somewhat vegan....she is lactose intollerant so that helps (hehehe!!!) but she will eat one egg a week (sunday morning) and eat tuna for lunch a few times a week. she loves animals and 100% agrees that animals are treated terribly but she says she needs tuna cuz it gives her energy and that eating one egg a week isn't as bad as what other ppl do and if everyone only ate one egg a week there would be no need to cram chickens in cages, etc. but she is still contributing to the cruelty, even if it is just a little bit. i read on one webpage that each egg layed is 32 hours of cruelty and another page said 22...whatever it is, that is still a lot of cruelty? anyone have some suggestions of what i can do or say to help my mom go vegan? i know she loves animals and would prob be much happier as a vegan knowing she is standing up for her beliefs sheila >lv2breathe > > >CC: Lv2breathe > Interesting chat >Mon, 2 Feb 2004 15:16:11 EST > >Hi Everyone > >I haven't experienced this in a long time... but I just had " the >conversation " about food animals with a NY friend I've been IM'ing with for >a long time. >I don't bring up these issues...only when they come up.
