Guest guest
Could you please put "OT" (off topic) in the subject line of posts like this? They have nothing to do with veganism. Thanks! Guest guest
While I have no objection to anyone putting OT as the title of their email I would remind everyone that on our home page the first line is: "This group is intended for vegans to chat about anything and everything - whether related to veganism or not!" Jo Could you please put "OT" (off topic) in the subject line of posts like this? They have nothing to do with veganism. Thanks!
Guest guest
Hi, That is true, but ideally I would have thought the subject should be of probable interest to vegans (related issues, animal rights, etc). With too many off-topic emails, it ceases to be a vegan list and becomes...well, a whatever is being discussed list that just happens to have vegans contributing. A religion and humour list, perhaps... There is no such thing as off topic on this list - it's a place for vegans to chat about anything they want to chat about. BB Peter
Guest guest
The chat doesn't stray from vegan/animal rights interest for long usually. There are only so many ways of discussing vegan issues that it may become boring if one has to limit oneself entirely to that subject. Vegans in general are interested in other issues too, and sometimes can have a sense of humour. A religion and humour list, perhaps... The whole point of vegan chat is to provide an alternative to the numerous vegan lists who get fussy about what is considered " off topic " . I set it up specifically because I was cheesed off with being told that things weren't of interest to vegans. I think we can all make up our own minds as to what is of interest to us - that's what the " delete " button was invented for. If you read the introduction page, it specifically states that this is for vegans to chat about anything - forget topics. We're humans, not merely vegans. Judging by the large number of members we have, that formula seems to have worked pretty well so far, so I see no reason to change it just because one new member hasn't read the intro page properly! Guest guest
Hi, I would not consider myself a new member, having been here a year or so, though I guess that is a fairly subjective term, and compared to some members I am indeed new. Nor do I mind off-topic mailings. I've posted a few myself. What I do object to, however, is anything that smells of a 'taking over' of a list, especially with religious postings, or in this case ostensibly humourous postings with religious undertones. Still, I'm clearly in the minority here, so think I will head off to one of those popular numerous other lists. Bye. Guest guest
Yeah, I'm so sorry, I don't mean to be intrusive, myself. I just think it's common netiquette to type in OT in the subject line if your post is not on the subject area to which the rs joined. I don' t think it's too much to ask, just a common courtesy. L. Now come on, John. As you know from our previous discussions, I follow a spiritual path which was actively persecuted by Christianity within living memory. I am therefore very touchy about instances where I think people are striving to convert me or to claim that theirs is the only " truth " . As you will probably also know, the other list I run is one which discusses the history of the Bible, and I therefore have a great deal of experience of people joining lists with specific religious agendas. Since it is clear who you are talking about, we may as well use his name... I have seen nothing from Jim which gives any indication that he wishes to " take over " , or to proselytise. OK, he has a particular religion which affects how he views the world... so do quite a lot of us! BB Peter

I disagree with you on this. I have not felt that Jim was trying to convert anyone to Christianity. We must realise that he is or has been a member of the clergy and therefore this colours the way he expresses himself, just as my Paganism does, or your way of life would with you. None of us comes from a completely unbiased standpoint but I feel we should all try to understand each other. If I am not mistaken, Jim is fairly new to veganism and it would be nice if he was welcomed by the vegan community. We do not wish to isolate people. Guest guest
Hi - please check the wording on our list page. There is no off-topic as long as everyone is polite, so there is therefore no need to put 'off-topic'. I feel that netiquette would call for the list wording to be followed, and if that list calls for nothing off topic, or to state if it is off topic to stick to those rules. If it is not a requirement to stay on any one topic then that rule should be followed. We only ask that any discussion or statement takes into account the sensibilities pertaining to veganism.
