My first challenge as a vegan

While the vegan diet has come naturally

to me, yesterday I encountered my first real challenge since becoming vegan –

buying shoes.

Now I am by no means a shoe freak, but I

usually like to add 3-4 pairs a season. All the styles that I really liked were

constructed of leather. Some synthetic styles that I thought were OK didn’t

come in my size. It took over two hours and three shoe stores to ‘settle’

for 2 new pair of shoes :o(

I know that there are a few online

sites, but I really didn’t see any styles I liked at any of them either

and generally with shoes I prefer to try them on before I buy. Anyway, I guess

I did alright because when I got the new shoes home my teen-age daughter

whisked them away (sigh) We wear the same size :o(

On another topic, I was just curious

about everyone’s weight & health – not specific numbers, but do

you consider yourself overweight, underweight or ideal weight? And how is your

general health?

I workout at Curves for Women and

recently won a month-long weight and inches lost challenge. Naturally a lot of

ladies wanted to know how I lost so much, and it gave me a good opportunity to promote

being vegan. Even wore my new ‘Ask Me Why I’m Vegan’ shirt

today;o) I am trying to encourage by example!

I hope everyone is well! It’s been

a little quiet.

Hi Lisa

I am overweight and would like to lose weight but it doesn't seem to want to shift now I'm older - probably because I have a knee problem at present (from an old injury) and cannot exercise as much as I should. Hopefully that is a passing problem. My general health is good as far as I know.

i HAD to respond to this one!! i feel your pain! our show choir (in school) stipulates the specific type of character shoe necessary to perform in the group. everyone's shoes came from the same supplier except mine. (leather.) i searched an entire summer before the season began, calling dance supply stores in different states and browsing every vegan store on the internet looking for taupe character shoes with a single strap and one and a half inch heels. nothing. then i searched for ANY taupe dance shoe. nothing again. i ended up buying similar-looking shoes from sears (which had no strap to hold them while dancing) and at every competition i taped them to my feet and put a little glue in the toe and heel, ruining 7 different pairs of tights. they also had to be 3 sizes too small to keep them from sliding off. OUCHYWAWA! then i was admonished because the judges singled out my breach of costume at every show. *groan*

(just slightly overweight. nutritionally sound. low blood pressure.)

Hi all,

I'm new and this is my first time posting on this board :)

I went vegan (from veg) about a year ago. I would have to say that

shoes were my biggest challenge as well. I have a weak arch, so the

arch support part of the shoe wears out really fast for me.

I quickly discovered it is not easy to buy non-leather shoes for men.

At first, I was forced to buy Payless shoes which I am opposed to

because I used to work there years ago. I finally splurged on a pair

of Dayra shoes, and I have been very happy with those. I will stick

with this brand.

While searching ebay for hemp products, I found and bought a pair of

IPath hemp shoes that were pretty cool. I got them for about 1/2

retail :)

For your question-

Im 6', 186 lbs, and I am in good shape (I workout a lot). My

favorite response to the where do you get your protein question is-

" Do I look like I have a protein shortage? "

" Expecting the world to treat you fairly

because you are a good person

is a little like expecting the bull not to attack you

because you are a vegetarian " -Dennis Wholey

Hi Tek

Welcome to the list - I hope you enjoy yourself here. I always have a job

with shoes as I have very wide feet. I think things are improving though

and there are more shoes available in general.
