Guest guest
Hi Colleen Welcome to the list. It is easy to put on weight as a vegan. There is so much nice food around. We use a Quest multivitamin mineral, and take extra vitamin c and vitamins e and essential fatty acids. At other times we take garlic tablets, or selenium tablets etc. depending what we think we may need. Jo > Hi! Guest guest
Colleen, I just read an interesting book Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating by Erik Marcus that summed it all up this way the average person needs about 2500 calories a day to function and we average about 2-3 pounds of food a day the quality of the food (vitamins & Minerals) does matter his idea was 3/4 of a pound of butter = 2500 calories 16 pounds of peaches = 2500 calories 10 pounds of rice = 2500 calories 8 pounds of broccoli = 2500 calories etc etc... so the best way for a vegetarian or vegan to avoid gaining weight is to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and try to keep our calories intake /food ratio to about 2-3 pounds of food a day that totals 2500 calories it might be a bit to work out at first but once ya get going it'll be easy anyway all the best Craig ..also new to the group Colleen [cfortner]Monday, March 29, 2004 7:19 AM Subject: new here--got a ?Hi! Guest guest
are you ingesting enough b12? my mom ordered me to a nutritionist in middle school when i became vegan and that was her (the nutritionist's) primary concern for me (flax in most forms should cover it). a great many of the vegan alternatives to popular foods contain WAY more fat than their unethical counterparts. it a flaw in the system thus far (they'll adjust the more our numbers grow). maybe you could switch from those kind of pre-prepared foodstuffs to raw and fresh meals with vegetables and minimal carbohydrate and lipid drenched foods. (tofutti iced uncream, for example, has 11 grams of fat pertiny serving whereas the average brand has half of that in a serving twice as large) ...oh, and hello! i'm brii and glad to have you here! >Colleen <cfortner > > > new here--got a ? >Sun, 28 Mar 2004 18:19:15 -0500 > >Hi! Guest guest
Thank you all so much for welcoming me and responding to my questions! Someone asked what being vegan means to me. I don't consume any animal products or use products from companies that do animal testing. I don't wear leather, wool, etc. I do my best to educate myself and others about animal rights. I went to the doctor this morning and found out that my thyroid is failing, so that is probably why I've gained so much weight. Found that out AFTER I posted the message. The weight gain just freaked me out cuz my diet is so healthy!...It didn't occur to me that it was something else. So anyway, this thyroid thing should be LOTS of fun!!...a little sarcasm... Thanks again for your help! Colleen
Guest guest
I agree with everyone about putting on weight when seeing the light and becomeing a vegan. There are so many alternatives now, unlike when I turned vegan. I had to chase off the dinosaurs for my leaves and berries! Babbling Once More... Guest guest
Hi Craig Welcome to the list. That information makes it sound quite easy. I'll have to see what I can do, although I don't think I need 2500 calories ad ay. Guest guest
Hi Colleen Sorry to hear about your thyroid problem. You will need to keep your intake of soya and soya products fairly low, as this can affect a poorly functioning thyroid. Luckily there are plenty of other protein foodstuffs to eat. Good luck Jo > I went to the doctor this morning and found out that my thyroid is > failing, so that is probably why I've gained so much weight. > Found that out AFTER I posted the message. Guest guest
Thanks Craig. I know I am not getting enough exercise lately, partly through shoulder and knee trouble, which I'm having osteopathy for - so that should be only temporary. What with that and working all day in an office it makes it difficult to get any where near enough exercise. I would be interested in more information, when you can.
