I am sure most of us have known about this for a long time, but an

interesting article for Grist On-line Mag about the connection b/t

beef and deforestation in the Amazon.

THE AGONY OF BEEF EAT

Amazon Deforestation Driven by Brazilian Beef Industry

The explosive growth of cattle farming in Brazil seems to be the

primary culprit behind an increase in destruction of the Amazon

rainforest, says a report released today. While spreading soybean

cultivation and logging frequently get the headlines, the Center for

International Forestry Research report says that it is beef exports --

driven mainly by European demand for certified foot-and-mouth-

disease-free meat -- that are behind the loss of some 10,000 square

miles of the world's largest continuous rainforest in 2002. That

figure is up 40 percent from 2001, and researchers expect even higher

2003 figures, available shortly. European Union countries import

almost 40 percent of Brazil's beef; 35 percent is taken in by Egypt,

Russia, and Saudi Arabia; the U.S., which has tight import controls

to protect domestic producers, accounted for only 8 percent. Once

the province of small local farmers, the Amazon rainforest is now

being consumed in large chunks by industrial farms connected with

large supermarkets. Enviros have called on the Brazilian government

to take measures to slow the destruction.

Hi Sara

I have read about the beef production causing deforestation. On the radio a

few weeks ago they had an article blaming soya production! I suppose nobody

wants to speak against the beef producers.

Hi Jo

Corrupt media seems to prefer money than reporting the truth .It seems it

has to be done by word and mouth and other means.

I heard the same radio broadcast. I don't remember if they actually

talked about it, but the whole soybean thing is related to beef

production, too. Soybeans are mostly used not to feed people but to

feed animals (cattle mostly). Because feeding soy to cows and then

cows to people is so much less effecient than feeding soy directly to

people, you need more and more land turned over to soybean farming. A

wonderful, vicious cycle.

That's very true Simon - I guess the beef producers are 'bigger' than the

soya producers.

I'd forgotten that they feed cattle on soya! If I remember correctly, they

didn't point that out in the programme either.

Yes Jo

I guess whether it's the poor cows or humans eating soya... the soya

producers would seem to have it sown up either way.
