Guest guest
Here's an idea. If and when the time is right you could say something like this: Recall the names of her farm animal pets and say this while talking about cows or lambs or pigs in general: "They are all ____________(fill in the blank with the names)." That way, she may realize all of them have the capacity to be a beloved pet...they are not different feeling wise if they are not her pets. Hope this is clear. I said the same thing to a friend who wanted to breed his dog for fun. His dog is named "Nissa". He thinks his dog is very special and the other dogs who have to be put to sleep everyday are not. I said to him regarding all those "other dogs"...."they are all Nissa's". We were petting the sheep when she was telling us a story about how some people were saying something about eating them. She responded with, "How could you eat them? They are our pets, they have names." She said that she could never imagine killing them. The thing is...she eats meat, she just won't eat her own animals. I didn't want to get into a big thing about it because it was my first time meeting her and my boyfriend and her just started to talk again, so I refrained from saying much. People are just so separated.-Samantha
Guest guest
>>I wish everyone could put aside an hour a week to cook in bulk from scratch and freeze. Now I know you are going to say that not everyone has the time/skill/inclination, but I can dream. I think that a lot of us would be a lot healthier, and have more money in our pockets. Well, if everyone could it would make being a vegan or vegetarian a lot easier to deal with ;=) I get a little weary of everyone saying that tofu tastes too bland etc or someone going into raptures about a new vegan burger or lamenting that Quorn is not vegan and wanting to find something that is *vegan* or even vegetarian that duplicates the taste of me*t. I run two veg lists, both of which exchange recipes etc., and I shudder every time I see the brand names of some of the me*t analog ingredients. There are lots of ways of tofu and tempeh and seitan (although I don't use seitan) that make them taste *wonderful* - not at all like me*at but not at all bland either. And yes, it'd be a lot cheaper to cook from scratch instead of opening a package, and most of us could well use the time we spend searching for the 'right' brand of an analog or of other ready-prepared canned or jarred or frozen items in Making Our Own. Of course I realize everyone isn't handy in the kitchen and some just dislike cooking, but it seems to me that being a vegan or vegetarian is a great impetus for re-thinking all that. And wasn't that quite a soapbox speech for this hour of the morning!!! So sorry. I rarely post to this list (although I enjoy it immensely) because I am not able to call myself a vegan . . . Thanks for your patience ;=) Now back to these dratted recipes saying '1 package of So-and-so's veg burgers, crumbled . . .' Ugggggh! Best love to you all, Pat - now in Montreal ;=) Friends. Fun.
