I well know that soda is terrible for me (drains my body of calcium, etc). No argument there. My question is how to get off it? I'm not sure I could just do it straight up. I drink maybe 3 or 4 Mountain Dews a day -- ugh! I know this isn't directly a vegan question, but more like a personal health question. Any thoughts?Sara

I have the same problem. I started to buy blue sky cola it is organic and doesnt have caffiene. From there I would only allow myself to buy a 6 pack a week. Then from there I decided that I would only allow myself to have soda if i was out. If i went out to dinner, etc. And for my house I just have a lot of juice boxes, orange juice, WATER, and soymilk. I know its hard but also think about this: every time you have a soda you are bathing your teeth in sugar.

I was a heavy pepsi drinker (that sounds kind of ridiculous but anyway) so I know where you girls are coming from.

I watched an episode of Mythbusters once revealed the effects of soda on teeth.

It wasnt pretty.

They placed a human tooth in coca cola for 48 hours. The tooth decayed slightly and was permanently stained a dark brown, which surprised and disgusted them. They both declared to no longer drink soda after that experiment.

I agree with Jen. The best way is to consistently remind yourself that you are bathing your mouth in sugar when you drink soda. Sugars are meant to be used sparingly in the diet and that includes soda. You'll also find that when you leave soda behind that you will won't feel bloated and have as much fat hanging around, at least thats the case with my experience.

I have replaced soda for vanilla soymilk or lakewood organic grape juice, and other healthy tasty drinks. Juices that are 100% organic and not from concentrate taste even more delicious than soda, are loaded with anti-oxidents that help prevent and eliminate cancer and other diseases. Water is also a great habit to get into. As you ween yourself off of addictive sodas, you start to enjoy the taste and benefits of water more and more.

Another tip is to write down a list of things that you like about drinking soda (it will be a short list and a list of things you don't like about soda. When you compare the list, focus on the problems with soda Any time you feel tempted to drink the soda, run down through the list until you memorize it. As you focus on this list, you will become more and more empowered as this becomes your new belief system. You'll not be interested in drinking Mountain Dew anymore, and likely disgusted by putting that poison in your body anymore.

I hope this helps you.

Hi Sara

You can chat about anything - doesn't have to have a vegan connection.

I can't help with your soda addiction though as I have never liked

fizzydrinks.

Jeffrey;

Hmmm... That is a good motivation, as I am very obsessed with keeping

my teeth in good condition. I am now trying not to picture my teeth

this really odd yellow color from so much Mountain Dew :) -- ugh!

I already drink tons of water (I am a field biologist in the desert

after all), but will try subbing juice for the soda and ramping down

my soda consumption. I am sure it will probably involve some caffine

withdrawl headaches for a while, but I can live with that.

Thanks;

Sara

The way I see it is that I gave up meat, eggs, dairy, drugs, drinking and

smoking. Soda and coffee are the only bad habits I have left and ya gotta

have something! :)

I had a terrible time with Diet Coke. I was spending all this time

and money on healthy foods, cooking, exercising, etc and yet I still

had this terrible craving for Diet Coke. I was dx'd with breast

cancer 2 years ago (at age 38 - no family history) and dh asked me

to please not drink the diet soda - he was worried about the

aspartame. I didn't for a long time and then slowly started up

again. Finally, I learned that Donald Rumsfeld had been the CEO at

Searle at the time they got aspartame approved by the FDA and I quit

cold turkey! All this to say that I understand how difficult it is -

maybe there is some deep dark Mountain Dew secret out there that

would encourage you? ;-) I like a little bit of organic lemonade

mixed with sparkling water. Also green iced tea is nice - you could

brew it with some stevia leaves for sweetening. And it's good for

you and also has some caffiene so maybe your withdrawals wouldn't be

so bad? Good luck! I know it's not easy.

That just makes me want to give it up all the more! " Giving up " all

those other things proves that I definately have the will power.

The best use for coke/pepsi that I have been advised of, is to tip it down the toilet......................

DONT FLUSH

leave it there overnight

and in the morning after you have flushed, it will be nice and clean.Off on a tangent again!

It's pretty good paint stripper as well... as witnessed when I accidentally spilled some on the bonnet of a car as a kid... before I knew any better.

Now, if you want to do some embalming, your best bet is the diet stuff! :-)
