Kristina,

Excellent point.

our neighbours, lovely people but total carnivores, came to our house for dinner one night (100% Vegan meal)

we made a variety of dishes one of which included Tofu

they loved it wanted the recipe etc etc..

on their own they would have never ever tried tofu

but be served tofu by us and was enough to get them over the Hurdle

I personally will never go to the fast food places for their burgers

but you may be right, even the Mc yucks attempt at veggie burgers may help people get over the hump

all the best

Craig

Re: have your friends go buy BK Veggie burgers

I just had another thought:

I had my end of the class potluck the other week....and my teacher tried my tofu dogs. Normally he would never had tried it had it not been for my bringing it. He said, "I see that they taste just like hot dogs". This was after making a disparaging comment about soy dogs in general.

Now the only reason I am bringing it up is that sometimes people just need exposure to new things to try them. My teacher, although educated, is not the type to try these things on his own. I am sure there are many like him who go to fast food places and would not think that veggie burgers are "good" until they see them at Burger King.

Peter,

I do several things with tofu

and I am not very good at writing out recipes

so bare with me

ok

on a flat baking pan

cover the pan with olive oil & or Sesame oil (just enough so the tofu won't stick)

cut the tofu into 1 inch squares

place them all over the pan

ok my old vegetarian way was to use honey

but I substitute maple syrup now

splash soy sauce on all the tofu

then pour maple syrup on each square more if ya like it sweet less if not

sprinkle with sesame seeds

I also add a sprinkling of Cajun seasoning

put in oven on about 220C (400F I think)

until they start to get firm

and serve with steamed Veggies

yum yum yum

another one

I have a grill like the one they use to grill steaks to get the lines on char grilled meat

we won't be using meat though (lol)

cut the tofu into 1 inch squares again

get the grill hot

put the tofu on the grill with just a touch of olive oil

grill till you have the grill lines on each side Maybe about 2 minutes per side (4 sides)

I warm up pure tahini in the micro wave

pour a bit over the top of the tofu

serve with steamed Veggies

yum yum yum

one more

once again 1 inch squares

I put finely chopped garlic about 3-5 cloves (more if ya like garlic) in a fry pan with olive oil

cook the garlic till it starts to brown

then put the tofu in the pan and cook till crispy edges About 3 minutes per side (4 Sides)

take the tofu out

leaving the garlic olive oil in the pan add about 4-6 diced tomatoes

a can of lentils (fresh or dried pre soaked are better)

cook for about 5 minutes

serve on top of the tofu with your favourite multi grain bread

this will satisfy your protein needs for a day or two (lol)

ok Peter I have more try some of those and tell me what you think

none of these recipes are for low calorie but aren't really that fattening either

I use only 3 types of oil in cooking

Olive, Sesame, Corn and one additional for eating raw on foods that require it

Avocado oil which is beautiful for salads and to dip bread

Avocado oil is expensive but really divine.

Tofu cacciatori is lovely. I don't have time to sort out the recipe now but will get around to it when I can.

Do you have a deep fryer?

also I have a good "pot pie" recipe that has a gravy, peas, carrots, potatoes, tofu, corn, and a easy to make crust on the top.

I hope you dont mind me answering this question from my own experience....

I marinate my tofu and put it in spagetti, soup, shishkababs, whatever. Or I buy the pre made stuff thats already marinated in like "Korean bbq" flavor or "herb roasted tomato". Those taste better than staight up outta-the-package-sealed -in- water- tofu.xjenisveganx wrote:

Crumble your tofu, marinate it (if you're in a rush

just use a pinch of turmeric and some tamari or Braggs

plus maybe a little ginger, ground chilies, etc., as

appropriate to the dish), lightly sautee it, then use

as if it was ground me*t in such things as shepherd's

pie, lasagne, spag bol, moussaka, cabbage rolls, oh

hey, the list is endless. Oh and chili non carne of

course. Tastes great, and many non-veggies think they

have eaten, well, what non-veggies eat ;=) if that's

ever a consideration for you.

Good luck. Tofu is great!

Pat in Montreal ;=)
