Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had advice about gaining wieght when vegan? I have been vegan for 4 years, and my husband (through gentle pressure from me haha) Has decided to go vegetarian, finally. My question is.... he is already underwieght at 5" 10' and 110lbs. And although his body is solid muscle, we both think he should reach a healthier wieght. (say: 135 to 145lb)

Are there any ways to gain wieght with a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle? What foods should we concentrate on? I was thinking more beans, rice, avacados, and olive oils. Any ideas?

Well, you can always add some nut butters (I love almond butter), and what about desserts like fruit pies? Oil pastry is easy and delicious as the crust, and there's nothing like a good fresh blueberry pie! (Or peach or cherry.) Lots of good wholesome breads ought to do the trick, too. Boy. Wish I had that problem!!

Hi! Well, I had this exact " problem " for most of my life (I was 5'10 "

and weighed about 100 lbs). It has taken some time, but I have

finally gained some weight and am keeping it on (now I vary between

120 and 130). As you have noted, oils, avacados, nuts, nut butters,

anything with good fats will help in the cause. Also, anything with

lots of protein (tofu, etc.) since 1 g of protein has more calories

than 1 g of carbs. Rice, however, fills you quickly with not many

calories. I also avoid meals made entirely of a salad because they

fill quickly with few calories. Basically, he should eat more of the

high-calorie foods than most people and fewer of the old stand-by

fill-uppers. My other advice is -- Eat often! If he has any lactose

intolerance problems whatsoever, he should avoid dairy since that

will just cause everything to " go right through " -- lost calories.

Hopefully that helps some.

Sara

Oh yeah, being underweight also gives you the go-ahead to drink

plenty of beer! Cheers!

Yes thank you, your answer did help. Eating more often is what im trying to make him do. And eating more filling (calorie laden) things when he does eat. Thanx!Sara <gagrip5 wrote:

Its all about the soaps. Oh and watching the tenth rerun of 'seventh heaven' with the sound off and making up you own story line. With the curtains drawn so no light penetrates.

Home brew? Where do y'all live? I'm there.

Beans. Plenty of protein, so they probably have quite a few calories,

I would guess. Haven't tried the all bean diet, though.

hmmmmm

*scratches head*

i'd have to pick SoCal...

vegas has always been seemed to me to the condensced version of wots wrong with the US, with lotsa sparkling lights added...

at least in SoCal there are pockets of sanity..small pockets, but pockets none the less

:)

cheers

fraggle

*who, alas, is probably overdue fer a vegas visit*

Ah, So Cal. I live in Las Vegas, so take your pick. Which is the

lesser of 2 evils, it's hard to say. If you ever feel the need for

a "vacation" in Vegas, just bring along plenty of home brew, and

you'll have a place to stay :)

True, but Vegas is so close to Zion and Death Valley and northern

Arizona and the coast and everywhere else good.

As far as vactioning in Vegas. Like I said, just bring some home brew

(or other good microbrewery beer of your choice)... :P

I too am an escaped ex so cal boy

San Bernardino

lived in high desert

and Salem Oregon too

I remember on KROQ they

use to call Hollywood and Las Vegas

Sodom & Gomorra (right out of your wrath of god bible stories)

well here I am in Perth Western Australia

just about as far away from so cal as you can get and still be near civilisation

and what kinda job do I do ????

I work in the only Casino here in Perth as a Dealer

don't figure does it (lol)

but here I am living the California Dream of having a house with a bit of land

an organic garden, environmental home, close to the ocean and to the desert (no mountains in W.A.)

and loving it I have been in Australia for 18 years

not the picture postcard of enviro friendliness but it is really truly is a great place to live

and I invite any of my fellow Californian vegan friends,

if they are in the neighbourhood, to drop in for a coopers (natural beer)

all the best

Craig
