I signed off one particularly hostile list, so I am hoping that the question I am going to ask now does not start a hostile discussion. I would like your ideas, I truly would. I will try to present my thoughts in an organized fashion.1. I have always worn New Balance Walking shoes. They are the only ones that have supported my orthotics, my heavy weight, my leg pain, etc.. For this reason, I love them.2. I have tried many other shoes: Easy Spirit, Rockport, etc. None are comfortable. My foot is extra wide: EE.3. New Balance, at my inquiry, sent me a rather ambiguous email telling me which of their shoes were animal-free. However, I will insert here what New Balance said about the glue in the shoes:"ALL of the following models are made with synthetic materials.However. please note that we do use different types of gluesdepending on what is available. Also be aware that some of ourglues will contain animal products as many glues do. Even thoughthe shoe contains all synthetic leather does not mean it willbe completely vegan. We do not mix real and synthetic leatherson any shoe. It is either leather or synthetic period."4. This means to me that there would be absolutely no way of knowing if the shoes were vegan or not. They might have animal-free glue, or they might not, but I would have no way of knowing. I am trying to do this right. This threw me for a loop, however. My question: Would you wear the shoes? Why or why not? Thanks very much.C. Gadarian You know your dilemma makes me think of My dilemma. Most of my shoes have no traditional leather but finding summer sandals, that are suitable for more than casual situations that are airy and not leather has not been possible for me. So I have a couple pairs of sandals (yes, only two) that do have some leather. I am not thrilled about it at all..but it's the only thing I have found that I could wear with dresses and at less than casual situations for the summer. No, I won't wear flojos! I am not hard on myself with this because I know I do a lot for the animals that make up for it....give money...write letters....eat a cruelty free diet, etc etc. We do our best with what we have on hand.... Guest guest
I believe that we have to pick our battles. Just wear the shoes out and look for something else next time. backpackingal
Guest guest
Hey, I still have a pair of non-vegan Birkenstocks. I got them for free when I really needed a pair of sandals. I'll wear them until they wear out and then (if I can afford it) I'll buy a pair of vegan sandals. Money is really an issue for me and my veganism, so sometimes I have to make concessions like this. Guest guest
I might be being over sensative, but I found when wearing leather foot wear I felt very uneasy realising it was an animals skin I had wrapped around my feet, almost like I would have rathered walk bare foot then carry on wearing them. I am not having a dig at you, thats just how I felt. Simon Hey, I still have a pair of non-vegan Birkenstocks. I got them for free when I really needed a pair of sandals. Guest guest
I'd wear the shoes until they absolutly could not be worn anymore.. because they will probably end up in a landfill somewhere other wise... and well, that may be a whole different subject to tackle. xo Tara , <simonpjones@o...> wrote: > I might be being over sensative, but I found when wearing > leather foot wear I felt very uneasy realising it was an > animals skin I had wrapped around my feet, almost like I > would have rathered walk bare foot then carry on wearing them. > > I am not having a dig at you, thats just how I felt. > > Simon > > Hey, I still have a pair of non-vegan Birkenstocks. Guest guest
I agree that items like animal skin shoes etc shouldn't be used to fill landfills. Most animals end up on land anyway ....their bodies naturally decay there. Wearing animal skins seems a bit too eerie to me now days to carry on wearing them.
