Guest guest
Hi, A "friend" of mine said this to me today. Any animal with a central nervous system anatomically has the ability to feel. Animals, however, do not have a soul and therefore, have no emotional feelings. (Laura - please don't hate me......) Other than cussing at her b/c this comment made me so mad, What should I say to her? I don't want to be rude but comments such as this make my blood boil! Guest guest
It is just a stupid comment so that she doesn't have to feel bad about animal pain. Ask her how she knows who/what has a soul and what doesn't and ask her to prove it, and ask her if she has a soul! It is amazing that stupid people making silly comments annoys us so. Guest guest
Hello Laura, People say that animals don't have a soul to justify the fact that they can kill them - in effect if you say something often enough it must be true. In reality they are confusing percieved intelligence with having a soul. In a veggie restaurant in New York there is a sign that says "if animals could talk we'd all be vegetarians". A soul isn't about intelligence, it's about life, and if you've got life you've got a soul. The question is, is your friend worth getting in such a state about? Rise above it and lead by example. Guest guest
Laura, First, I would ask her where she is getting this information. Then question the source. Secondly, her comment is not logical-- Is she saying, one must have a soul to have feelings? I thought that beings have feelings because of central nervous systems... not because of souls. And emotions, well-- do we not have emotions because of chemical reactions in our brains? Not because we simply have souls. xo Tara , backpackingal@a... wrote: > Hi, > A " friend " of mine said this to me today. Guest guest
Ask her why my cats meet me at the door when I get home even when there's food in their bowl. Guest guest
I would simply remind her that different belief sysytems / religions have very different views on this, and that unless she's got some sort of direct pipeline to a higher power, she really ought to a) be more open to thhe possibilities offered by belief systems other than her own, and b) keep in mind that this is the kind of stuff that can be VERY offensive to some people, and she really ought to think before she speaks... If I were feeling realy motivated about it, I might suggest to her that, as no one really " knows " if animals have emotions (just as no one really " knows " if another person has them, or what another person's emotions might be), in your interactions with them, you're kind of making a leap of faith either way into the belief that they do or do not. There is no harm to be caused by deciding to behave towards animals as though they experience emotions, even if they do not. However, there is immeasurable harm to be done by behaving towards them as though they LACK emotions, if in fact they have them. Guest guest
I agree with you - animals are very emotional - they love and fear, and sometimes have a recognisable sense of humour. Their not that different to human animals. Guest guest
I agree, though it's seem so many other animal types have sharper senses than ours and they seem a lot easier to get on with. Guest guest
Anyonw who's spent any kind of time at all with animals has to know that - My husky, for instance, has it in her to be more of a moody bitch than me at the peak of the PMS! She'll sit around in the corner, sulking away, until I've paid enough attention to her that she's convinced I'm sufficiently sorry for whatever way I've slighted her.... If she's really frustrated with me, because, say, I will not actually allow her to eat her way into oblivion, she yells at me, gets a crease in her brow, and stomps her foot, and she does indeed fancy herself quite the jokester..... Guest guest
Just thought I'd post an experience I had today. ( hope u don't mind me posting on top of yours Jo?_ I was riding alone on my electric motor cycle today on a main roadwhen I was about to pass under a railway bridge, I saw a a piegeon running around in circles with it's head having been flattened and blood pouring out of it.... then I saw ( what must of been it's chick walking around in confusion( I can only guess that it had fallen out of the railway bridges' under_ side and that it's mother had flew on to the busy road to try to rescue it and suffered that fate, anyway I stopped my bike in the centre of the road and tried to stopped the on coming cars from hitting the chick who was calling out in confusion as well as not knowing which way to turn. I managed to slow an on coming car to a near stop, The chick then stopped and looked up at me and seemed to want to fly up to me for safety, It couldn't fly as it was to young, It then walked under my bike for safety....by this time another motor cylcist had stopped behind me to help. he reached under my bike and got the chick out and a passer by on the other side of the road shouted that he would take the chick home and and call the rspca. The only good from that experiene for me was that the chick was saved and that people were willing help out. I wish piegeons would find safer places to nest. Simon In fact, she was behaving much like a human. Our budgie used to think it funny to splatter us with water. Jo

Guest guest
That does sound pretty awful for you. But, if you hadn't happened along, chances are no one else would've noticed the birds, and the chick wouldn't have stood a chance, so............ Guest guest
Hi Mikey, I sure understand trying to live cheaply. We've got 8 in our family and I'm a stay at home mom married to a school teacher. No big bucks here :-) I make stew a lot.w/ potatoes, onion and celery for a base and whatever else is leftover. Sometimes w/ lentils, sometimes not. Potatoes.a lot of taters:-) I make a nutritional yeast gravy for them and add veggies for toppers. " Pizzas " .a slice of gluten free bread, spread w/ spaghetti sauce and topped w/ whatever veggies I have and a slice or two of tofutti cheese. I use TVP a lot as well, into " meat " loaves, spaghetti sauce..etc. Tacos w/ refried beans and whatever else you like in them. That's off the top of my head, hope something helped.
