Guest guest
Wed 01 September 2004 UNITED STATES/California Ford Europe has announced it is reversing the decision to scrap its most fuel efficient electric cars and will investigate sending them to eager customers in Norway. For now we are waiting on written confirmation from the Ford headquarters in the US before ending our pressure. Ford was planning to scrap 440 electric vehicles but after a week of pressure from us and other environmental groups it appears that the decision has been reversed. The cars will now be sold to Norway where customers are waiting for them. Ford attempted to justify its actions by saying it needed to scrap the cars due to a lack of government regulation. In fact Ford helped trash the very same legislation it now claims is holding them back a few years ago. The vehicle is popular with consumers, waiting lists to buy the cars have existed after a hugely popular leasing period started in 2001. Zero-emission cars reduce urban smog. When charged by electricity from renewable sources, these cars help fight the biggest threat to our planet: climate change. With record oil prices forcing gasoline prices up, they are also a sound economic choice. Popular, clean and efficient, shouldn't this be part of the future of transport? This corporate U-turn took little over a week and highlights how ludicrous the original plan to crush the electric cars was. We are awaiting written confirmation and a transparent commitment from the Ford US headquarters. So why not declare a victory right now? Why the caution? Well, it seems this particular corporate leopard doesn't change its oily spots so easily. It still has the most fossil fuel hungry fleet of cars in the US. In the very week it reversed the crushing decision, Ford CEO, Bill Ford wrote a letter to California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger opposing a proposed law that would encourage purchases of the most fuel-efficient cars. While not scrapping electric cars is a start, the real issue Ford should now be focusing on is producing environmentally friendly, zero emission vehicles for the mass market. Currently the company likes to market a green image even though its current fleet of cars is actually less efficient than the 80-year-old Model-T Ford! They should stop hiding behind empty talk about experimental fuel cells and rather do as Henry Ford would have done, continuously improve efficiency and establish mass production of the most modern zero emissions technology that is already available today - modern battery electric vehicles.
