Here's a website that explains it. Scroll down to " Tropicana Is Bugging Your

Juice. "

http://www.vegparadise.com/news13.html If you Google it, you'll find more

than you'd ever want to know about cochineal extract. It's also in a particular

yogurt and in Good & Plentys & God only knows what else.

Hi everyone:

Where did you find out about this?

I had NO IDEA.

I don't drink Tropicana, at least I don't think so...

OMG.

I am in shock.

Is there a website that lists these kinds of things?

Yeah like when I discovered that my Tropicana ruby red grapefruit juice got

that ruby red color from cochineal extract which comes from crushed beetles. I

still haven't recovered from that one.

This site may answer some of your questions.

Lots of stuff. I read about this maybe a decade ago, and have seen it many

places. Another term for cochineal extract is " carmine color " -- or just

" carmine " . same thing.

Yeah. Did you know that it takes something like 155 000 to produce one kilogram

of dye?

I do believe that most food colouring is till synthetic, teh recent upsurge in

cochineal farming is due to health concerns. The 'natural' gye is non-toxic and

non-carcinogenic, although it has had negative efects on small number of people.

This just goes to show, one must read the labels.
