Guest guest
Hi Jim. Welcome to the group! To answer your question, this is a very large group consisting of vegans, ethical vegetarians, vegetarians who are in in for the health benefits, vegetarian wannabes and people like you who are just looking for an occasional alternative to meals consting of meat/poultry/fish. Not everyone who is here loathes meat. In fact, I'd bet that some downright miss it. If those people can be offered a product that comes close to the real thing but is cruelty free and far better for you and the environment than meat, why not take advantage of it? I don't care what it's called as long as it fits in with my lifestyle. HTH TM
Guest guest
Hi. New member here. Not a vegetarian, but very interested in tasty vegetarian dishes. So I my curiosity is piqued--why are so many vegetarian dishes meat-dish look-a-likes? Why are there bean 'burgers'? and tofu 'meat' loaves? Guest guest
Hi James Welcome to the group. As a long-term UK vegetarian, this question has never really crossed my mind. Meat loaf does not really exist over here so eating a nut roast has never seemed to me to be like eating a meat dish lookalike. When I first became vegetarian, burgers were only beginning to become popular over here and yet I used to make nut or lentil rissoles which are not dissimilar. I guess that the burger or rissole is just an efficient way of cooking. People are vegetarian for different reasons. Some people want to avoid meat for ethical reasons and yet like the taste of meat, so there are vegetarian substitutes like quorn and TVP which they can eat instead. I can't stand the taste or texture of meat and have had to throw out bean burgers I made myself because they tasted too much like meat (or at least my dim and distant memory of meat.) I think it is great that we are so diverse and that there are foods that suit each of us. Search the files, James and you will find loads of tasty vegetarian recipes. Guest guest
Hi James, Personally I don't care for meat alternatives like the veg dogs or Boca burgers. I prefer the bean burgers since they make up into a nice healthy sandwich with all the trimmings. The loaves don't taste like meat either, they add to the meal as a side dish for me, easy to pack leftovers for my lunch at work. I go weeks on end with no loaves or bean burgers. I don't miss the taste of meat at all. Donna --- james singer <islandjim1 wrote: > Hi. New member here. Not a vegetarian, but very > interested in tasty > vegetarian dishes. Guest guest
Husbands are the reason for the meat alternatives. I'd be fine without them but my husband, who has become almost completely vegetarian since we got married, would eat MS Farms sausage patties, Italian sausages, and Chik'n strips till he exploded. Happy medium, he gets the food he wants and I don't have to deal with meat in the house. Plus there's lots of good stuff you can make with them. Not long ago I made the most awesome pot pie with the MSF Chik'n strips, vegetables, and mushroom soup (among other things). Good stuff. Kadee Sedtal Build a man a fire and he'll stay warm for a day. Guest guest
Hi James, I'm a vegetarian & my family are omnivores, so we buy a lot of " meat " substitutes because it's easier to transition & planning meals when we use them. I wouldn't use them at all if I were eating alone Whitney james singer <islandjim1 wrote: Hi. New member here. Not a vegetarian, but very interested in tasty vegetarian dishes. Guest guest
Beats me, but I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian for about 20 years before I tried my first veggie burger. (Garden Burger, still a favorite of mine.) Since my father was a supplicant at the altar of Freud, I'll return to my roots and propose...Meat envy? Na. Maybe its just because it tastes good.
