Guest guest
We all recently raved about the Smart and Earth Balance buttery spreads. My local grocery (Hannaford) does not seem to carry the latter. They do, however, have a few of the Smart Balance choices. Here's the decision I had to make the other day: 1) w/flax, 2) light w/flax, or 3) " original " . Only this last option was vegan. The regular flax one had whey and the light w/flax had some lactic acid as a preservative, but no whey. The first two are about 9 g of fat and 80 cals per Tb. The light is much less of both, 45 cals per Tb. So, I stood there and did not know what to do for several minutes. We're talking some major empty calories here! Ultimately, I made the decision that I suppose only a vegan for health rather than animal rights could make: I bought the light, barely non-vegan version. Please don't think any less of me. LOL. And for those vegans who may not think to check a container of solidified vegetable oil for dairy, now you know. -Erin www.zenpawn.com/vegblog
Guest guest
Erin, FYI lactic acid is vegan. Lactose is not. http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/faqingredients.htm#lac One clue that is helpful when looking at package are the kosher symbols. U or P in a circle means no dairy. I'd seen that with lactic acid as an ingredient which made me check this out in the past. Jody
Guest guest
Perhaps I missed another ingredient then, because you would have thought they would happily proclaim it's veganness, as they had done on the " original " version. -Erin www.zenpawn.com/vegblog , " Jody " <alladinjw wrote: > > Erin, > > FYI lactic acid is vegan. Guest guest
OK, I have a theory. I bet it's the vitamin A palmitate. -Erin www.zenpawn.com/vegblog , " Erin " <truepatriot wrote: > > Perhaps I missed another ingredient then, because you would > have thought they would happily proclaim it's veganness, as > they had done on the " original " version. > > -Erin > www.zenpawn.com/vegblog > > > , " Jody " <alladinjw@> wrote: > > > > Erin, > > > > FYI lactic acid is vegan. Guest guest
Your last post made me go check things out as I have the light with flax oil in my fridge and it does have the vitamin a in it, but no whey. A quick search turned this up though: In reply to my email to them: All Smart Balance Light spreads are vegan along with Smart Balance Organic Whipped Spread and Earth Balance Non-GMO All Natural Buttery Spread. Joan Dippolito Consumer Relations GFA Brands Inc. It looks like smart balance light is safe for the vegans among us, though I have to say I prefer the earth balance anyway. , " Erin " <truepatriot wrote: > > Perhaps I missed another ingredient then, because you would > have thought they would happily proclaim it's veganness, as > they had done on the " original " version. > > -Erin > www.zenpawn.com/vegblog > > > , " Jody " <alladinjw@> wrote: > > > > Erin, > > > > FYI lactic acid is vegan.
