faux fish

A friend of mine, inspired by the food I cook him

when he visits, and intellectually urged along by

reading The China Study, has decided to try going

vegan for a month. He sees fish as his big hurdle

to continuing the lifestyle past that introductory

period. So... I would like to find him some

alternative recipes/products to fill this taste.

Looking in the recipe section, we have several

tuna fish salad options, but I think he's referring

more to things like baked haddock or what have you.

There are tofu fish sticks, posted by Donna, and

reposted below for reference. I have question

on that particular recipe. The cornmeal does not

have a step in the instructions. I imagine you

simply dredge the tofu in it before baking.

Anyway, any other thoughts or suggestions for

recipes and/or products?

Thanks,

-Erin

Made this for lunch yesterady and all 5 of us thought they were tasty

and easy

to make.

" Tofu fish sticks "

1 package of firm or extra firm tofu

1 tblsp kelp powder

1 cup cornmeal

1/3 Braggs Aminos or soy sauce

1 tblsp Mrs. Dash, Spike or Vegit seasoning

1/3 cup water

Olive or Canola oil to coat the baking pan

" Dipping Sauce "

1/2 cup mayo or vegan mayo

1 tblsp nutritional yeast flakes

1/2 cup sweet pickle relish

1 tblsp sweet pickle juice

Cut tofu into long or short thin strips. Marinate in mixture of

water, Braggs,

seasoning and kelp powder for about 1 hour in the fridge. Combine

dipping sauce

ingredients in small bowl and refrigerate.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and use olive or canola oil to coat

baking pan.

Bake sticks in oven for 10 mins. Turn and bake for 10 more minutes.

Let cool a

few minutes before serving with dipping sauce..

Erin I thought I went back in to fix that. yes,

dredge the tofu in the cormeal to coat. You might

like to try this recipe and see what you think. I

know you like spice so I would suject if you want to

make it for your friend add a good amount of seasoning

like Mrs. Dash, Old Bay if you use it and a pinch of

red pepper flakes.

OK off to correct that recipe now.

Thanks. I made these for lunch today and they are quite

good and convincing enough for this veggie of 11 years

or so. Whether my friend finds them so, we'll see. :)

I'm definitely going to blog about these. Do you mind

if I post the recipe (with all due credit, of course)?
