You said " friendly " , so I'm going to assume you are looking for any

cookbook with a reasonable number of appropriate recipes. ;) If there

are any vegan gluten-free cookbooks, they probably have tons of soy, so

they're not something I would own.

Any particular region of India? Each little area has its own signature

cuisine.

It's not vegan, nor is it completely gluten-free, but I just picked up

Chandra Padmanabhan's _Dakshin: Vegetarian Cuisine from South India_

recently. Most of the recipes are vegan and only a few ask for

wheat/semolina. Most of the flatbread is made from rice or urad dal

flour. There are a few recipes calling for yogurt or buttermilk, but

you could skip those or substitute for them. Ghee, of course, can

easily be replaced.

I haven't tried any of the recipes, as I'm in the middle of a household

move. The cookbook has gorgeous pictures, however, and is highly

appealing. The ink used to print the book is heinous, though--it

wasn't allowed to cure thoroughly, so the book smells like a new

National Geographic. It should outgas in a few years.

I also have Madhur Jaffrey's _World Vegetarian_. Her books are all

lovely. This one isn't vegan, but there are plenty of vegan recipes.

It's not completely gluten-free, but again, there's plenty to work

with. She has other vegetarian cookbooks, but I'm allergic to soy, so

the _Worlds of the East_ book wasn't so helpful for me. ;)

Hi

I have a birthday next week, and I'm looking for ideas for cookbooks I

could get for gifts.

I'm the only veggie in the family, though DH and DD will eat veggie a

couple of times a week. We like a wide variety of foods, and we'll eat

Chinese, Indian, Mexican or just about anything else.

Any ideas?

Happy birthday next week!

My recommendation: American Wholefoods Cuisine by Nikki and David Goldbeck. It's

a veritable encyclopedia of vegetarian recipes. Read more about it at:

peace and blessings,
