Guest guest
H, I am new to the group and very interested in learning about this life style and in eating healthier! I have a stubborn 4 yr old who only wants to eat McDonalds chicken nuggets, pizza and sweets. That is it!!! His twin sister eats fruits, veggies, salads, I think she could live alone on these foods. I am on the heavier side, My hubby has gained weight, my two teenagers are overweight, so we need help!!! I just watched the show SUPERSIZE ME last night, and what an eye opener!!! For the first time in my life my blood pressure is starting to climb, so I am seeking help and advice. At times, I look and smell meat, and get kind of disgusted by the smell, but other times, I love the smell of a steak!!! HAHAHA So I am open to new things. Thanks and nice to meet you!!!! Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the garden. Bringing your family over to the green side can be done, really. You may need to get creatively sneaky with your 4 year old and use one of the vegan mock chicken nuggets and make pizza at home but it is possible to transition over to vegetarian. I've been a lacto-ovo (I will use eggs and dairy but only from free range local organic pets) vegetarian for over 20 years now and the smell of cooking bacon STILL makes me think how good it would be on a sandwich but then I look at the huge scar on my husband's chest from open heart surgery at 46 and think.....na, pass. There are so many incredible recipes in the files that will help you! I think the easiest ways to transition is by de-meating recipes you already use for things like spaghetti sauce, chili, Tex-Mex. Don't be afraid to use TVP. It has the right mouth feel for those who expect hamburger in their spaghetti sauce. Getting the sugar out of your family is harder. People generallly will grab a Coke rather than a bottle of water. Crystal Light makes a great (expensive) packet of flavoring that makes a bottle of water a little more appealing to the kid expecting a bottle of bubbly stuff. Good luck! Guest guest
Good Morning and thanks for the advice! I have 2 questions! One is...what is TVP? and the other is doesn't Crystal Light have aspartame, or something like Splenda in it??? Is that really safe to be consuming???? If I am going to try to go green, I would like to do it all the way! How do you feel about Stevia??? I did not know about mock nuggets! That will be great! Thanks for all the help !!! Guest guest
Not sure what the sweetener is in Crystal Light the print is way too small. TVP is textured vegetable protein and way cheaper than meat (and good for you!) This is a good start to read up on the product. http://waltonfeed.com/self/tvp.html Long shelf life, easy to use, cholesterol free...but if you are soy intolerant you will want to pass on the tvp. I think Boca makes the mock chicken nuggets we had once. My carnivore son will actually eat them and he is much like your 4 year old when it comes to food. (and he is 30) Hope this helps! Guest guest
If you could join a buying club, it will give you a lot more options than your local grocery store for healthy food. Here is a link for the northeastern part of the US, I do know there are others if this doesn't cover you. http://www.unitedbuyingclubs.com When I made the switch with my fam, I didn't tell them, I just did it. By the time they figured anything out they had already been eating it for awhile. Good Luck Chris - " Kendra " <fancepants1 If I am going to try to go green, I would like to do it all the way! Guest guest
Morning Star Farms has chicken nugget - plain or spicy. These are better heated in the oven or toaster oven than in the microwave. They are also good on biscuits or dipped in various sauces (ranch dressing, barbecue sauce, white gravy.). We like them with mashed potatoes. Pat _____
Guest guest
Yes they are very good and it is so easy to find the Morning Star Farm products in any grocery stores freezer section. We like them baked better too. We also love their vegetarian " Corn Dogs " , breakfast strips, breakfast links, grillers, spicy Black Bean Burgers, " Chicken " patties, etc..... Guest guest
OMG! The breakfast strips on a BLT made with oat nut bread are heaven. We make " sweet meat burgers " out of the grillers by adding brown sugar barbecue sauce and sweet pickle relish. The kids love them! Guest guest
I don't know for sure what's in the Crystal Light, but I can assure you that Splenda is absolutely safe for you. Splenda is derived from sugar, but is never metabolized by your body. So you get that great sugar taste, and that's all, it just passes right on through (like corn through a baby!). I was worried about it too when I became preg so I asked my OB about it and she said that it's perfectly fine since it doesn't get worked into my system, it never gets to the baby. Aspartame is safe for pregnant women in limited amounts, and sacchrin is absolutely a no-no for most people. HTH, Liz ----Original Message Follows---- Kendra <fancepants1 Re: introducing myself!! Guest guest
Kendra, Do a search of the archives on all the posts on Splenda, Etc. The best thing to eat are the things God made for us. He (or she or it) did not make Splenda, Crystal Lite or the ingredients that made them. GB , Kendra <fancepants1 wrote: > > Good Morning and thanks for the advice! I have 2 questions!
