They always try to accommodate me, but I never expect special treatment and usually shop while I'm there and prepare my own food at least some of the time. I just don't like putting anyone out because of my lifestyle. If it's family and you choose this route everyone should, hopefully, understand. Guest guest
I'm still trying to go vegan this year and...wondering what y'all out there do when you travel to see family (by plane, so there is no way to bring a veggie side dish to dinner, etc) and are trapped with whatever foods they prepare, for example, meat spaghetti even though they know you're veg? thanks! Guest guest
On airplanes I take a cup of noodles, vegetable flavored, of course and a small plastic bag of julienned carrots celery, brocolli and cauliflower flowerettes. When I get hungry I have the stewerdess fill my cup with very hot water and dump in my vegies. Within a few minutes the vegies are tender and the noodles are soft. Guest guest
I bring some of my cookbooks with me, choose some recipes, make a shopping list and go grocery shopping when we get there. I've never met a woman that doesn't mind you helping out in the kitchen when you stay with them. It also gives you time to visit with each other. They love my cooking and appreciate the extra help and new recipes. I know my mother-in law loved to hand over over cooking meals to me when I came, because she felt at a loss as to what to make a vegetarian and this took the pressure off of her. She loved my cooking too, so that really helped. She was so sweet. I miss both her and my Father in law that have passed away now. They were wonderful folks. Guest guest
I just bring fruit and sandwich and gorp, a combo of dates, raisins, dried pineapple, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, pecans, etc. for the whole family, GB , TendrMoon wrote: > > In a message dated 1/29/07 7:00:25 PM Eastern Standard Time, > mapalicka writes: > > > I'm still trying to go vegan this year and...wondering what y'all out there > > do when you travel > > to see family (by plane, so there is no way to bring a veggie side dish to > > dinner, etc) and are > > trapped with whatever foods they prepare, for example, meat spaghetti even > > though they > > know you're veg? > > > > The only family of mine that fits into that category would be my daughters > (both non veg). Guest guest
I haven't ordered plane food for awhile but I used to order Hindu vegetarian. Not all airlines have it but the food is much better than the vegetarian. I also think some airlines have (had) Asian vegetarian. If I am not mistaken, they often serve eggs with the vegetarian meals so if you don't eat eggs, then order the vegan or hindu vegetarian. Guest guest
Katie: That is a great idea. I usually make a couple of PB & J sandwiches to bring with me. Last year when I was coming home from Chicago they were not alowing any liquids or jelly on the plain so we stopped at Panera bread and bought a coule of loaves we had it on the plain and then when we got home. It was good. Gayle cozycate Mon, 29 Jan 2007 7:35 PM Re: family gatherings? Guest guest
I had to look up Gorp in Wikipedia - I wasn't sure if the combination was cooked together or just left raw. I understand it is like trail mix, which is apparently known as scroggin in the UK - that's news to me! It sounds good to me. I have the impression that it is far more acceptable to be vegetarian in the UK. I am very lucky as my family are used to me being vegetarian (almost 30 years now) and are very accepting of it. My nieces are both vegetarian too. I'm not sure how they will cope with me being vegan and I think I will probably shop and cook for myself. I will discuss that with my father's wife before I next visit.
