Guest guest
Thank you guys for your response. I do appreciate it. I just wanted to say that no, sometimes you do not have a choice. And what is confusing about my problem? I am a vegan I am just having a hard time fully 100% commiting to it lately. My soy cheese here is like 2.50 for a pretty big bag and I eat that with my 2.95 Veggie burgers or wraps. I also eat pasta and rice and veggies. I live in NJ and I eat at Vegan restaurants in NYC when I can afford it. Sometimes I go out with family or friends to eat(exception of like 3). They NEVER want to eat where I eat, they make fun of it and don't understand. They are not vicious they just don't get it. SO I order veggies plain or pasta. I ask if the pasta is yolk free and sometimes it is not so I eat it because I am hungry. When I was a strict Vegan I ate out all the time in the city. They have awesome Vegan restaurants that would never let me even think about any other food. The city cost money and I work their and I live 15 minutes away from there so that is where I shop and eat. I guess what I am saying is that I feel deprived of something. Because I do not have the money to cook the way these restaurants do so all I eat is pasta, rice, veggies. That's it. And when I can by Amy's I eat that a lot but I don't think that's the best food either bc it is frozen. And now that is starting to make me feel funky. I do not crave dairy or meat so it's not like I am looking for excuses to eat food that contains dairy products. Produce here is very expensive especially organic. It it is crazy to say being vegan is less expensive. Because if I wasn't a vegan and was broke I would be surviving on $7.00 a day on food bc bad food is cheap. Yes of course you have a choice in what you eat. And of course I have not been stranded on a desert island with some elaborate story that forces me to kill to survive. But sometimes you don't have a choice when you are lacking in the money department. Actually you could by eating pasta and rice every single day and the other food I eat but then you start feeling weird bc that is all you eat.I can't deny the way my body feels. I just have to find an economic way of eating vegan because what I am doing is not working. I will never not be vegan. I don't miss it and I think animals are treated like shit and I don't want to be a part of that. I do appreciate the advice on beans, I need to eat more beans, protein, tofu, mabe that is what is making me feel sick lack of protein. More nuts to. So thank you for bringing that to my attention. I got stuck in the same food routine and it was affecting me. I also want to learn how to cook. First I need a table and all the proper cooking utilities and cook books to start doing that. Hopefully by the end of the year I will have all the necessary things to eat EXACTLY the way I want. Thanks again for all your quick responses. Patty PS- Is it really necesarry to point out TWICE about my little poll mistake sarcastically. By the way I am a horrible speller as you can read. Guest guest
It must be very different over there as over here eating vegan is the cheapest way to eat. Of course, that doesn't include organic stuff, ready made meals or meat/cheese subs but pulses, rice & pasta are very cheap and if you live near a market, veg is cheap too. Unfortunately, vegan food isn't government subsidised hence the ridiculous price of stuff like soya milk which costs pennies to make if you can afford a soya milk maker or can be a*sed making it yourself. As for eating out, I would have thought that would be a no-no if you're that broke - challenge your friends to find something fun to do that doesn't cost anything. Over here we have free parks (not so good in winter!) and museums, and there are books on what you can do for free in London (where I live). I appreciate those things might not be available elsewhere. Is there a FreeCycle group where you live? You can have a look at http://www.freecycle.org/ - someone might be able to help you out with stuff. Anyway, hope your finances improve soon. chikalunatic [chikalunatic] 07 November 2004 23:13 Subject: Thanks For Your responsesThank you guys for your response. I do appreciate it. Guest guest
I really cannot understand your problem - it is cheap to eat vegan - lentils, beans, rice - very cheap. A packet of lentils costs about 75p (UK) and can make at least six meals if you add onions and a few veggies and potatoes, or a dahl type meal. Might not be very exciting, but your ethics can't be up to much if you give up being vegan because you can't affor exciting food. Guest guest
well dunno where you live patty but..being vegan can be pretty dang cheap... i can go to some market and get a huge bag of veggies and fruit fer less then $20.. course..costs go up if i go organic.... the high costs generally of being associated with *veganism* are all the proceesed foods..all the analogs..all the prepacked stuff.... then again..depends were you are i guess... i had someone visiting from indiana recently, and she was basically piddiling on herself cuz organic pineapples were .99 cents each here... but.. fruits and veggies still are the best route to go... and then there's rice and beans.... as fer eggs wot do you mean by *humane*? first off...at least here in the colonies, eggs you buy in any store are not going to be fertilized...no roosters... BUT any male chicks hatched from a hatchery are usually killed, generally by tossin em in plastic bags to suffocate male chicks are usless except fer capons more er less and...*Free range* is a usless term here in the US it conjurs up images of chickens runnin around in some farmyard MOST *free range* chickens here are just kept on a factory floor..thousands of em ... soo..instead of being cramped in battery cages..they are cramped on the floor... its also a personal decision... but...i just gave away the eggs we got from Edde..our handicapable chicken... alas, she is no loner with us... anyways good luck fraggle

Guest guest
I never once said I would compromise my ethics bc I can't eat exciting food. It's not about that it's about that either I am horrible at cooking up my self a decent meal and variety or something else is wrong. My body doesn't feel right. And because of everyones responses I noticed it might be lack of protein. You guys are supposed to be a support group. I have been vegan for 9 months and the only things I have eaten that are not 100% vegan are the ramen noodles bc the have egg white and the occasional pasta which also contain egg whites. And that is only this past month and a half. I decided when I saw how chickens were killed never to eat animal product again. And I did that cold turkey. The same day I saw the video. I have not eaten any kind of meat or real cheese, cream or cake just the things a listed above. And before that all I ate was meat especially steak. And I did go out the other day to a seafood restaurant and they has abosolutly nothing for me. Even the rice had beef stock so I ate a plate of brocolli. And it only cost me a dollar. So I do try very hard. But things don't always work out that way. I thank everyone for their advice but I don't appreciate the tone either. , " Jo bb " <Heartwork@b...> wrote: > I really cannot understand your problem - it is cheap to eat vegan - > lentils, beans, rice - very cheap. Guest guest
I'm from Indiana, and I can agree that vegan food is expensive here. Since I am a college student, I'm pretty broke. I basically live off of refried beans on corn tortillas with tobasco sauce and home made vegetable soup with brown rice, frozen vegetables, and beans. It gets pretty boring eating on a vegan buget since those things are about all I can afford. If I didn't have multivitamins (which are also expensive), I wouldn't be able to do it and remain healthy. I don't even eat out because there's no where around here that I can really eat and trust that it is vegan. We didn't even have anywhere to buy anything organic until the middle of last month when a little organic market (That only has a limited amount of produce) was opened. So, I think you guys that don't live in a place like Indiana are being pretty hard on her. Plus, it says on the description of this group that vegetarians are welcome. She never said she was gonna eat pigs or cows or even fish, so give her a break. , fraggle <EBbrewpunx@e...> wrote: > hmm? > she just wanted to buy up every pineapple she saw > heh > > > > > Strange response! Guest guest
I can understand where chickalunatic is coming from. I live in a tiny tiny town -- 300 people. We have one little grocery store. Good apples are about $1.30 per lb. Watermelons are only there in season, and they're 5 bucks each. Organic? Not a chance finding anything like that around here. I am only 16, and I still live with my parents, so I can't exactly dictate the grocery list; they're meat eaters, and I'm not. I try to eat vegan, but it honestly is hard. Even beans get expensive. xXx Breanna xXx >fraggle <EBbrewpunx > > >Re: Thanks For Your responses >Sun, 7 Nov 2004 16:18:15 -0800 (GMT-08:00) > >everyone has a choice there patty >you said soy cheese cots this er that, correct? >soo >don't eat soy cheese >go eat an apple.. >wot are they, a buck a pound? maybe $1.25/lb fer organic??? >you said when you had money you ate out all the time vegan >well..eating out(except as mass market mcdeathburger type places) is always >expensive...and those so-called cheap places have lotsa hidden costs which >tax us all >eating out vegan is generally more expensive because >1. the whole margin of scale thing... >2. speciality markets are always more expensive... > >but >eat fruits and veggies!!! > >be well >cheers >fraggle > > >chikalunatic <chikalunatic >Nov 7, 2004 3:13 PM > > Thanks For Your responses > > ><html><body> > > ><tt> ><BR> >Thank you guys for your response. Guest guest
Hi there, Patty ;=) I get this by Digest, so I am coming a bit late to this discussion. But I noted a remark you made: >You guys are supposed to be a support group. And I had to smile. This IS a support group (I lurk a lot, but I know em well ;=)) - it's supportive of you in your veganism, not supportive of you in not being quite a vegan sometimes, regardless of reason. And why? Because you have chosen veganism and, since this is a vegan group, it would be wrong of anyone to suggest that another way of eating and living was acceptable. Ya know? Everyone want to HELP! Hon, you don't go to, say, AA, and expect them to say beer is fine as long as it isn't whisky and there was nothing else to drink. LOL Btw, I don't think you're lacking protein - the amount of protein we think we need is based on eating *animal* protein which is not easily used by the bod. I think you need less chips and salsa (not much nutrition there) and more fruit and veggies - bananas, apples, etc. and cabbage is great for slaws and salads and cooked dishes, including soups, stir-fries, and it's cheap too. Rice and lentils or beans, as someone has suggested, can be made in a variety of wonderful ways that can include veggies or not. >.I thank everyone for their advice but I don't appreciate the tone either. No, I guess not. But it wasn't an unfriendly tone, you know - it's just that it didn't tell you quite what you wanted to hear. And since you're feeling unwell, it's easy to mistake straight answers (and they were) for something else. Btw, cookbooks are expensive - so pick one carefully - _How it All Vegan_ is a good one for beginners! I recommend it. And then look on the web for recipes - there are umpteen of them out there ;=) Imagine, getting two or three really great recipes under your belt and then you can invite all those non-sympathetic friends home for *real* food! LOL Best luck, hon. pat the lurker in canada ===== ----------- " The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. Guest guest
I agree with Fraggle, it is common sense, if your on a budget to stick to essential basics, rice, potatoes, durum wheat pasta, beans and lentils, and every veg and fruit you can lay your hands on. If you are skint and there is a market nearby, you can always ask for the bruised fruit or veg and cut the bad bits off, beleive me theres no shame in it, and you would be surprised what they would throw away just because they dont think anyone would want it. If you get a few sheckles together invest in some spices and try one or two, I would suggest cumin, and coriander to start then try others. If you have space or even pots grow your own herbs they thrive on neglect! Hope this helps The Valley Vegan....fraggle <EBbrewpunx wrote: everyone has a choice there pattyyou said soy cheese cots this er that, correct?soodon't eat soy cheesego eat an apple..wot are they, a buck a pound? maybe $1.25/lb fer organic???you said when you had money you ate out all the time veganwell..eating out(except as mass market mcdeathburger type places) is always expensive...and those so-called cheap places have lotsa hidden costs which tax us alleating out vegan is generally more expensive because1. the whole margin of scale thing...2. speciality markets are always more expensive...buteat fruits and veggies!!!:)be wellcheersfragglechikalunatic Nov 7, 2004 3:13 PM Subject: Thanks For Your responsesThank you guys for your response. Guest guest
Hi Bea > Plus, it says on the description of this group > that vegetarians are welcome. Indeed it does, and they are. However, the description starts out with " The group is intended for vegans... " (I should know, I wrote it!)... it is a vegan-oriented list, and as such, people can expect a vegan point of view to be predominant, and can expect non-vegan points of view to be viewed unfavourably by the other members. For what it's worth, one of our most active members is a vegetarian rather than a vegan, but is quite happy to accept that the vegan view is predominant. Guest guest
start a garden??? Breanna Knudsen <waitandbleed_14 Nov 7, 2004 7:27 PM Re: Thanks For Your responses I can understand where chickalunatic is coming from.
