Guest guest
Hi Fraggle > 1. the 4 hurricanes in florida ruined there crops I'm slightly surprised that something that far away makes such a huge difference... I mean, on a European scale, we're talking about something like prices in England going up because of a few hurricanes in Russia! Guest guest
our food production is all linked economy of scale stuff produced in the midwest is shipped a thousand miles to be processed, then sent to a warehouse in the other direction, then shipped out to stores somewhere else... most of the US farm produce comes from either florida er california(excluding grains)..if something goes wrong in either place, prices shoot up within 2 weeks... now..if you buy from local farmers markets, yer insulated.. the problem is the larger combines sell to whomever..so stuff is shipped all over... most of our local stuff is heading east... Guest guest
Oy! Well, I didn't notice any sharp increases at the store this weekend, but it could just be a matter of time. Although the store I frequent was a local farmer's market chain that was bought out by Whole Foods. I notice they pull from locally grown goods whenever possible. Maybe that's holding prices in check. Guest guest
my guess is stores that buy locally should do better but.... you still should see prices go up some... tomatoes here went from $.99 each to $3 here overnite... thats wholesale... dunno if it will bleed over into organics as well.. morgaana Nov 16, 2004 1:29 PM Re: speaking of produce Oy! Guest guest
Hey, Laura. I also shop at a local Farmer's Market that was bought by Whole Foods. You aren't in the Atlanta area by chance, are you? morgaana wrote: Oy! Well, I didn't notice any sharp increases at the store this weekend, but it could just be a matter of time. Guest guest
Hi peter, I live in florida. I have a few orange and grapefruit trees in my backyard. the hurracaines, one after the other knocked down almost all of the fruits. it was sad. they were all green and not ready to eat. It was such a waste of food. there must've been two hundred small green ones on the floor. about five minutes from me, there is a humongous orange company named tropicana. I imagaine that their oranges must've fallen down too. -anouk - Peter 11/16/2004 1:48:59 PM Re: speaking of produce Hi Fraggle> 1. the 4 hurricanes in florida ruined there cropsI'm slightly surprised that something that far away makes such a hugedifference... Guest guest
Hi Anouk, Sorry to hear about the loss of your fruit, you must have been looking forward to them. I usually eat half a grapefruit most mornings, and most of them seem to have a Florida sticker on them. The Valley Vegan....Taga Sickler <zurumato wrote: Hi peter, I live in florida.
