Guest guest
Hi Catherine I'm sorry you have to go to hospital. I really don't know about the food. I know Lloyd Grossman re-invented our hospital meals and included veggie options, but I doubt any are totally vegan. You will need plenty of protein to help mend properly, so it's a good idea to take lots of bags of nuts with you, and maybe some cartons of soya milk - you can get small Alpro, which wouldn't go off before you've finished them. You could also take raisins and apples, bananas, and other fruits. It might be a good idea to contact the hospital a week or two beforehand, and let them know you are a vegan, and ask to speak to their caterers. Do you have a friend who would be able to bring extra supplies in, if you are left to starve? I have a Hindu friend at work, and (admittedly back in the 70s) when she had her baby in hospital, she stayed in for a week, and there was no veggie food at all. After three days of not eating anything, because there was nothing suitable, her family brought in meals for her. Anyway, good luck. Guest guest
I would also speak with your physician on this matter and ask the physicians office that when making your arrangements to include your dietary needs. If there is any trouble you will know in advance and your doctor should be able to deal with the hospitals staff appropriately, including the dietician. Good luck! Where are you located? Guest guest
I'd call the hospital ahead of time and tell them you will eat only whole grains, fruits and vegetables. How can they complain about this?? If possible, get your doctor to put in the word as well. Then, eat only what fits. Last time I was in the hospital, I gave the hospital dietician information about what brand of frozen, microwaveable vegan meals was available locally. They were supposed to have some on hand by the time I checked in. Then, when it turned out they didn't get them, I got a friend to bring me food until the hospital got around to sending someone out to buy the vegan meals for me. Guest guest
Hi Catherine Animal Aid did a survey about hospital food for vegans and veggies quite recently. They have a hospital catering pack on their website. http://www.animalaid.org.uk/veggie/archive.htm Hope this is useful and I hope the operation and recovery goes well. Guest guest
Hi Catherine Some further thoughts on your hospital supplies... I really would take lots of nuts and raisins, and small cartons of alpro and apples and bananas. You could also take some tomatoes - they would last quite well. You could take bread rolls to last the first couple of days. Maybe after that time the hospital catering will have sorted itself out and be able to feed you properly. You may be able to eat the vegetables from the dinners, and if their Cornflakes/Rice Krispies are Kellogs they are vegan. You can pour water on them if necessary - not so nice but it would help fill you up. You could ask them to find out if their bread/toast is vegan, and eat it with jam as it is unlikely that they would have vegan margarine. There are Trufree vegan pot rices (like pot noodles only better) in two flavours. You could take some of them with you and ask for near boiling water to put on them. Guest guest
Hi Catherine, When I was in hospital for a week when my first child was born i was surprising how obliging they were. They asked me if I had any special dietary requests and I said that I was vegan and they asked me what I ate,- I said my partner was bringing in most of my food , but if they could get me some soya milk and make me some beans on toast and a jacket potatoe with some veg and they did it,- most of the veg was overcooked but they got me soya milk and came up with a few other ideas aswell, hope this helps, Jo - Jo bb Thursday, November 18, 2004 10:36 PM Re: nhs hospital food Hi CatherineSome further thoughts on your hospital supplies...I really would take lots of nuts and raisins, and small cartons of alpro andapples and bananas. Guest guest
Hi Catherine, Sorry to hear that you will be spending Chrimbo trying to avoid MRSA?!...only joking, not cheering you up eh?! ( on that subject, try and insist that the nurses wash their hands, I read a column the other day, where they were advising patients to take antiseptic wipe to hospitol with them , advising them to keep wiping the handles to the toilets/ the bedside cabinet etc...) I was under the impression that on admittamce , you were normally asked whether you had any dietry requirements, and that you can ask to see the hospitol nutritionist ( every hospitol should have one......allegidly) have a scan at this link: http://patientexperience.nhsestates.gov.uk/bhf/bhf_content/for_patients/diets.asp Hope this helps.........don`t know if they accomodate Pagan ceremonys on site though!
