i wouldn't work at wal-mart

hahahahahahahhaha

ya know..i rarely have had *vegan* work issues

i've laways worked fer places that actually have gone out of their way to

support me

when i worked fer berkeley game distributors, one of the co-owners would

actually go into the kitchen when we had company dinners and read them the riot

act on wot was vegan, wot wasn't, and that they'd better have something

suitable..post haste

the place i work at now, a much bigger company..heck, they always have vegan

pizza fer me...

and a ton of the books we publish are on sustainability, vegetarianism, leftist

thought, etc...

cheers

they sell Leather Shoes and your boss wants you to work in that Dept ?<BR>

Walmart was just an eg., Let me make my question more General: If your work

place violates Vegan Issues how do you deal with it ? This is not just for

food/lunch as one can easily bring their own.

I work in a restaurant that serves meat. I've worked in restaurants for basically the last 10 years with one exception when I worked at Sears. Ever since I became fully vegan, a little over 2 years ago now, I have faced this dilemma every time I put on my work clothes. I have limited work options, however, and until I get out of school, I don't know where else I could work. I don't have a car and I live in a place where it's freaking cold for 4-5 months of the year so I need a place within biking/walking distance... I don't live near any vegetarian restaurant. There's none in my city, even. I have limited hours I can work as I go to school two or three days a week from early in the morning until late in the afternoon and I need lots of time off for studying and I get paid a pretty good wage and my schedule is extremely flexable. But I deal directly with meat... I sort of feel stuck, I suppose, although I know I'm not. But there is nowhere else that I can imagine working that could provide me with the flexibility and proximity to home that i have with this job. I really don't know what to do... I'm glad you brought this up, as it's been on my mind for quite some time.

Hi Zachary

You do what you need to do - it's not like you're buying and eating the meat. There will come a time when maybe you will have more choice.

Hi Jo:

Great advice. I would assume this is universal for all other work places with

other Vegan issues as well. Hopefully, in the future we will all have more Vegan

choices.

I assume so - I know that Zachary is young, and life can be difficult

enough. It's not always possible to do everything at once.

Initially, several years ago I went to School in the US. Almost everyone I knew

ate meat and the cook in the School Cafeteria had to specially prepare

Vegetarian food that was strange to me. The first year this really hit me hard.

But later on I managed to adjust.

Thanks for understanding my dilemma... I do everything else in my power to harm nothing.. it just gets me down sometimes that i don't know what other road to take in employment while I'm in school. I suppose I could work at the mall, but I dislike commercialism and capitalism as much as I dislike serving meat, if not more. There'll be plenty of options soon though, hopefully!

last nite i came up with a time when my veganiness and my employment clashed....

last year, i took my then partner to work, and found out the baker had just

decided to not come in

it was a bagel shop..and it was 5am

so..i just said.. " fine, i'll do it "

had never baked commercially before..but wot the heck

and didn't need to be at my other job til later

so..fer 6 months i was their baker...

and...long with all the other bagels, they had asiagocheese bagels...

my stoopid simple solution..i didn't bake em...

someone else had to do it

i wasn't about to touch curdled cow pus, nor encourage anyone to purchase it...

on the plus side..i did get them to bring in tofutti spreads, and vegan

knishes...

alas..the place is now gone...
