Guest guest
Hello Everyone, I am new to the group and I was wondering if I could get some advice.....I am a student at IUP. One of the courses I am required to take for my major is a cooking lab. In this class we have to cook various foods and eat them. I have been vegan for almost 5 years now and would not eat some of the foods. This means I lost points on these assignments. I met with the chairperson of the department and she told me I should rethink my major(Nutrition). Of course this made me very angry and I argued the point that the syllabus stated that I could be exempt from eating these foods for religious reasons or food allergies. I argued that being vegan is based on morals and ethics, just like religion. What I am seeking help with is locating some documentation stating that what they are doing is unjust so I can turn it in and get my oints back for the class. Thank You for your help and I look forward to talking to you Shawna

One of the courses I am required There are several Vegan sites. Perhaps these can be used as proof. Post your issue to several other Vegan/Veggie Sites with Forums, that way more people can see it. You need someone really strong to help/support you I feel. Try contacting the VeganMD at http://www.drgreger.org/ or www.veganmd.org Also, one another good board I suggest is www.veggieboards.com Best regards, Vijay
Guest guest
Wow, I am sorry that they are requiring you to eat non-vegan foods and then punishing you for not doing so. The only thing I can think of is that this is similar to medical students refusing to participate in frog dissection/animal torture labs or something similar. There has to be info out there regarding this. Perhaps, you might have to get legal on them... I'm not sure, maybe the aclu has some info on this. to me veganism is like a religion, because I base my acts and behaviors on this philosophy, just like someone does who is deeply religious in the standard way. and please don't change your major. We need MORE vegan nutritionist out there. you might be alone in your class, but there are plenty of us here in cyberspace supporting ya! -anouk , " shawnady " <shawnady> wrote: > > Hello Everyone, > > I am new to the group and I was wondering if I could get some > advice.....I am a student at IUP. Guest guest
Also, go to pcrm (physician's committee for responsible medicine) website and contact them. They have lots of good science-based info on vegan diets and also experience in helping students defend themselves against this sort of thing. Good luck and stick to your convictions! sara > , " shawnady " <shawnady> wrote: > > > > Hello Everyone, > > > > I am new to the group and I was wondering if I could get some > > advice.....I am a student at IUP.
